Red little worms in water and Chicken ill!* UPDATE *

Quote:
Total Mile Kill Powder is DE. In spite of its name, you are seeing the problem with it, it may reduce the numbers some, but it will not kill an infestation. You need Sevin 5% garden dust or a permethrin/pyrethrin spray or dust such as Adams flea and tick spray or many brands of "poultry dust" or "poultry spray" sold in feed stores. And you need to retreat in 10 days to get the eggs that hatch as the treatment will not kill eggs.

This is what you need to use, sevin dust...found in the garden section of most stores including home improvement stores. Use the link that carrir and ddawn provided on how to dust them.

Sounds like bloodworms, which I think would be an indicator that you need to change the water and wash out whatever container you're using. I don't know that they'd cause an illness in your chickens directly, but if they are proliferating in the water, that means bacteria and other nasties are perfectly capable of doing so as well.

I try keep there water clean but this was an old bucket at the back of the garden that i hadn't realised was there.
Thank you!Daisy. xx

I understand RedDrgn concerns, but everything I've read about midge fly larve (i.e. bloodworms) shows they are harmless, including to chickens. They actually eat bacteria, good and bad. I think you've identified your problem source as mites or lice. The treatments outlined above should help with your ill chicken.

Thank you. The water is now cleaned and they have been wormed so the worms or water issues weren't the problem. i'm ordering some of the Servin 5% online and until it comes feeding her by hand and using the total mite killer.
Thank you..

As far as dusting the birds is concerned, we actually do a "premature shake & bake" as my brother calls it. One person holds the bird (with your hand underneath and fingers holding the legs) and the other puts one of the plastic-y type feed bags with the dust in it over the entire bird except for the head. The person with the bird then holds the bag shut (but not too tight) with the neck sticking out and the other person kinda shakes the bag around to ensure "full coverage". The neighbors probably wonder what the heck we are doing while this is going on. And good luck with your chicken!
