Red Rum .... I mean ..... Red Bum

I've wondered .... he got his name because he's a, well, you know! He's the head honcho. If one of the other 2 roosters get their groove on, & he's around, he'll run full speed & actually body slam them off of the hen. He just jumps over the hen & knocks them off. Some times he'll grab the other rooster by the back of the head & pull them off. But the roosters never fight with each other. There's plenty of land for them to all go in completely separate directions, but if Peter hears a hen call out, he takes off running in their direction. I have hardware cloth (1/4 x 1/4) over most of the doorway that goes from their stall to outside/paddock (each stall has 2 doors). At the bottom I put up plywood about 2 ft high & built a sliding door to lock it at night. When it's cold I'll shut the dutch doors, but this time of year I leave them open for more air. He'll camp out by the plywood & keep an eye on what's going on outside. He's a jerk, but a good boy too. He does his job!

I have 2 more safeguard dewormings to give them. The blu-kote is about 1/2 gone. I figure, if I keep up the blu-kote until it's gone, that'll be enough time to see if the safeguard has had any change on her. If there's no change, she's going to end up having a really nasty bag balm butt ...... if she get's feathers back, that'll mean there's a feather plucker in the flock & I'll have to try to figure out who it is. Too bad bag balm wasn't colored!

So ..... do anyone else's chickens LIKE the taste of the safeguard? A couple of mine act like it's a treat! I use a small 3cc syringe with a cow teat cannula on the end, they're too funny!

It's been almost 3 weeks so I thought that'd I'd give an update ...... nothing! She still has a bald red bum. If anything, it's a little balder. I'm starting to sweep up feathers, so I think some are starting to molt. Everyone got .5 ml Safeguard pr 2.2 lbs for 3 days in a row. Hopefully that was a good dosage. I just got more de-wormer in, incase I need to hit them with it again. Everyone has been dusted with the permethrin dust, as well as it's in their stall in their dusting area. Their stall was completely cleaned out. I've kind of given up on what else it could be. Only one thing left to do ..... bag balm her butt!

Could this be an area that was frostbitten? Or sunburned?
I think I would apply Desitin or zinc oxide thickly for a while. When I look at my chickens will smaller bald areas under their vent, I always think of their stool "burning" the skin below.

Red Rum????? Too much Shining?

Between taking care of a couple of hens with sour crop from too much fruit, one death from a freak accident when a horse somehow stepped on our favorite hen, & one that got flystrike ....... LG's butt got put on the back burner. No pun intended! I only put bag balm on her once, almost a month ago, & it did no good. But yesterday I noticed her butt had some feathers when I went to put pine tar on her to see of that'd help. I should have figured, right when everyone is losing feathers while molting ...... she grows hers back! Only other change is 2 weeks ago we built a roosting bar stand for them. My thoughts ...... there was a pecker that didn't care about bag balm & blu-kote.......... or something with molting?

Well I was thinking that maybe during molting the first feathers to lose are the abused ones (such as butt feathers or saddle feathers). I usually cut the feathers off that keep accumulating dried poop.

Her butt was bare for around 7 months! Poor thing ........ no clue if it was because one of the other hens or a rooster was pecking them out when she was on the old roosting bar stand, even though I had put blu-kote on her for a few weeks with no change ..... or if something went wrong during her last molt & she's just now getting them back. It's awesome to see them growing though!
