Redinator's First Hatch-Along w Bonus Broody: And Everything Thereafter

The new owner sent me an update on the chicks and Black Sexlinks I sold.

The Black Sexlinks came out of the coop for the first time today and she got a rooster to breed with them.

The 6 chicks are doing great and are toasty warm in their brooder pen. They're so fluffin' cute.

Everyone made it through. The temps dipped into mid to low 30's overnight and everyone made it.

I did realize while researching 'how to keep chickens warm' I need to change out the round poles for flat pieces of wood on their perches. That will be on my project list for this weekend.
I never knew that either until recently. Luckily I read it not too long ago. Our roosting bars are just 2x4s.

I have two of the ladder perches side by side. I plan to bend/trim the side rails (?) so they line up better and make one long perch with 2-3ft sections between the 4 rails. I'll get before and after pictures when I set it up.

I'll also need to collect up the bantams over the next few nights and do wing trims. They keep getting on top of the runs and now the standards are following them up there. 🤦‍♀️

That sounds right. Our coop and run and fully enclosed and they don't get any time outside of them due to predators. But Shirley and Rilla sure can fly! They'd be who knows where if I let them loose.

I was doing work in the yard and noticed this:

Kettle

Dutch: Kettle and Pot's Chick

Dutch just recently started getting the leakage across his back. I saw him out of the corner of my eye and thought he was Kettle until I realized the size difference. Dutch even has his dad's wonky comb.

They're both so handsome!

Very pretty, even with leakage! ❤️

I've decided to set up the smaller run as a permanent grow out pen.

It's been emptied and thoroughly cleaned.

I've added fresh shaving, soil and sand.

The flock waiting to get to work spreading the new bedding.

I replaced the torn pool noodles.
I will switch to wood eventually, but I got the pool noodles for cheap and still have plenty.

That's as far as I got since I caught a cold middle of last week. I hate being sick!

I will be making some changes to the chick hut (dog house) adding low perches (maybe just fallen branches?) and setting up permanent chick hides for the youngest chicks.

So I honestly tried not to have chicks my first winter. I even sold the batch I hatched on Halloween.

But it seems my local chicken dealer had other ideas:

Look at these beauties:

By my calculations they turned 3 weeks on the 14th of November. One zombie chick (Ayam Cemani rooster/White Leghorn hen) and 5 Gen 2 zombie makers (that's what she called them, so I'm going with it, lol.)

From what I was told by the breeder the Zomibe chick is a sexlinked pullet. I also asked Google and it said they aren't sexlinked, but I don't believe anything Google tells me about chickens anymore.

To the best of my recollection, The black chicks are Ayam Cemani rooster/Zombie hen and the white chicks are White Leghorn rooster/Zombie hen. Feel free to correct me if I got that mixed up somehow.

PS: Yes I intentionally use the word dealer because she has the goods I can't say no to, lol.

I don't believe Google chicken info either. Your chicks are absolutely precious!

I don't know if they're sex linked either. But I did talk with a zombie breeder not far from me who said his were, so maybe?
