Redinator's First Hatch-Along w Bonus Broody: And Everything Thereafter

Sweety's 3 chicks finally made it all in the run without assistance, but Cookie decided he wanted to sleep dead center on the top of the run, out of reach. vlcsnap-2025-10-18-19h03m29s188.png
I almost didn't see him up there and we have an owl that hunts rats in our yard.

I did manage to get him down with a ladder. I used the end of a rake for him to grab on to so I could pull him within reach.

Good job little chickies! They really catch on so quickly. He sure does look cute up there!!! Glad you seen him though and got them all put up safely.

If he were a bit bigger I'd let him stay up there and get rained on so he'd learn WHY they go in the run, but he's still snack size for an owl.

Cookie stepped things up a notch tonight and recruited 3 other chicks to join him on the roof of the run. I didn't get pictures because I was more concerned about getting them down. The ladder and rake trick worked on the other 3, but not Cookie. He was wise to the trick and kept stepping over it rather than grabbing it like he did the first time..

I had my son use a pole to poke him from the underside of the mesh . . .it got him to move, but he stayed in the center of the run where I couldn't get hands on him. He's a smart chick and I thought about leaving him there, but there's an owl out there and the forecast in calling for rain and the nights are getting chilly.

Wait . . . make it rain . . . yup . . . it worked . . . I had my son hose him a bit until he got within reach, grabbed him, brought him inside and dried him off. Once he was fairly dry I brought him back out and wedged in the center of the cuddle pile.

Something tells me IF I keep him, he will need his own thread:rolleyes:
