Redinator's First Hatch-Along

Pics
Just my notes: Snickers, Cookie and Kit Kat have feathered legs, Reese has naked legs . . .

Can anyone tell comb type yet? Pot and the two boys have straight combs, Sweety has a pea comb.
To me, Reese and Cookie look straight, and Snickers and KitKat do not. Which means that Sweety carries one copy of the recessive straight comb gene. *this is based on what I could see from the pics, head on pics showing the comb more clearly might help a bit more*

More pictures . . .these poor babies, lol. They're taking a nap it took me a bit to give up on the zipties idea.

Right leg / left leg / both legs / no zip tie will let you tell four chicks apart without needing different colours.
When my Elly had a litter of 5 girls and 5 boys, those silly colored Velcro bands got lost often. We eventually used nail polish. blue for boys, pink for girls. Oldest got one nail painted, second got two, etc . Even at 6 weeks at the first vet visit, the nail polish came in handy to knowing who got weighed and vaccinated.

Chickens have nails. Just saying.

I've thought about doing that in the past but the only nail varnish I have to hand is shiny metallic stuff that makes the older birds bite when I wear it, and new chicks already go through that toe biting phase...
They bite their own toes?

They bite their own toes?
And each other's! I mean, they peck at everything at that age just to see if it's food, but mine always go after toes so enthusiastically that I think they must think they're worms or something.

They usually work it out after a day or two but it's something I'd be slightly wary of encouraging, especially if I had chicks that were pecking each other a lot already.
