Hi All,
I'm looking to find out how long I need to use the red lamp for my baby chicks. As of today they are 2 weeks old and growing like little weeds. This is the first time we use a red lamp for them. Usually when we had baby chicks, they are in the house until we know they can handle being in the coup. Can anyone help me and let me know how long to use the red lamp for warmth?

Thanks,
NHRedmom

Most nights are pretty warm, we've only had a few nights that the temp got down to the mid 50's. Thank you for answering. :)

I wish it would get that cool here as I believe it was only 106 F degrees by 10 AM here .......

Ya my brooder has only been used for holding chicks for a little more then a month now and I have a welling fan over it to keep the chicks cool and it is working for now as the temps have been cool this year and we only got 3 inches of rain total last winter ....

I'm on the Seacoast. I brooded in the house at the beginning of May and I used the lamp 24/7 through week 3. But during week 4 and into week 5 I put the red light on just at night. Not so much for heat, but it seemed to comfort them. When the red light came on, they all gravitated towards it and went to sleep. Middle of week 5, I put them out in their coop with the red light on at night until the nights were at least 60 (less than a week), then took the light out.

Hi jonalisa, I'm figuring during the day I will keep the light off since they seem to want to be away from it and at night turn it on cause it still gets coolish here. I used to live in Hudson, we moved to Deering, NH almost 8 years ago. My babies are in the coup, just fenced in a small area of it. They can get fresh air with no problem, along with natural daylight. And they have plenty of space to move around in. Boy are they getting their feathers. They looks so cute.

I miss that phase already!
I lived in Hudson too. For 7 years. Left in 2003. We lived on Wade Rd near True Value on 102.. Couldn't stand the traffic congestion. Love the seacoast!

I knew someone who lived on Wade Rd. My ex bf's brother and his wife. They had a daughter named Stacy, their last name was Laine.
