Redneck/thrifty chicken pen, latest pics post 46!

Great coop!

I bought a bunch of old dog run (12 panels) used on craigslist for $300. Works great for a large run. I also like that I can put a dish tub outside the fence to water the chickens and my dogs. The chickens just put their heads through the chain link.

Love it. Its a pretty pen

Hooray for you! Who has $500-$1,000 laying around to build a coop anyways! No way you're ever going to "re-coop" that loss selling eggs. If you paint it a pretty color, it will look fantastic (you can get free paint at the hardware store from returns, or ask friends for old paint they want to get rid of).

Since I don't have any carpentry skills, I'm notorious for my hillbilly pens, which always cost under $25.

See this wheelbarrow? It's my turkey nesting pen (I've had 3 successful hatches in there):

And this is my trampoline turkey pen:

What I really like about your 'casita de pollita' is that although you were scrounging for materials you still made it tall enough for you to get inside if you need to. Awesome job!

I'm loving this thread. You must have read my mind about the trampoline pen. I envisioned that same thing in my mind but didn't know how to do it. You just gave me the idea that I needed.

Keep up the good work everyone. And keep saving money!

I say IF IT WORKS...."USE IT"....right?!!! My neighbor moved, and forgot his dog kennel like the one you see on my coop....well I contacted him and told him he said awwh heck, means I have to go back and move it...*its dismanteled but thrown in the yard*..he says do you want it for 25.00?

HECK YES!!!!! Its as big as the one you see in my coop right now....man I rushed next door and pushed and pulled it over to my property....

*my chckens better love me* all that hard work....

I love you coop! I was discouraged when I was first considering getting chickens. Pre made coops or kits are so expensive. Lumber is too. I am building mine out of whatever I can scrounge. I don't think the birds will mind.

That is great! I spent almost 400 dollars on my coop/run. I want really badly to expand but I will NEVER pay that much again! Love getting ideas from you redneck/thrifty people!

I wondered what I was gonna do with the broke down dryer accumulating dust in the garage!!!! Out here it costs $50 just to send out the recycle truck to pick up dead appliances and another substantial fee to dispose of it. Great idea!!!

There used to be a salvage yard somewhere on Nine Mile Road (or close to it) in Pensacola, there was also one in Destin. Though that was 20 years ago but I think the salvage yard in Pensacola is still there. I'm pretty sure I saw it last time we went home. We used to get all our lumber from those places when I was growing up. Might be worth it to look into salvage yards.
