Redneck/thrifty chicken pen, latest pics post 46!

I think the only thing we've paid for is the chicken wire. We just put them in the barn stall that opened out into an enclosed run. The person we bought the house from was a contractor and left a shed full of tounge-in-groove 2x6 beams that we use for everything. My husband can mill that wood into whatever size he needs it seems and built the nest boxed out of it. I just don't see the point in paying for things that you quite often can get if you just look around and work at it a bit.

This is what I was thinking of originally:

But changed my mind to this because I can add another level of pots on a second shelf if need be:

And another shot of the coop, this time with the temporary tattered tarp in place. According to all the reports we aren't expecting any rain in the next 10 days, so that will give me enough time to scrounge more supplies for the roof. And due to the forecast of yet a bunch more days of 100+ temps we hacked off a low hanging branch on the pine tree and moved the pen under there. Total shade on 3 sides. Also give a more camouflaged location from the dogs when we can add a run to it.

like your coop,...I have my blue and gold macaw outside in a dog kennel also, I built a safety frame door inside, so I can go in and she wont fly out...Eragon loves it outside....so not only is my chicken coop attached to a dog kennel...I also have my big parrot outside in the back yard.

Of course I have a lock on the fence part, and I also have a lock on her wooden door inside...I dont trust her!!! my other parrots are in the house...I have an escape artist and the cage has locks on it...CC Rhyder. the other 2 stay put so far.

Impressed with all the ideas.

Why did I toss my old dryer out?

My daughter keeps eyeballing my gram's old convection oven. She thinks it'd make a great nesting box for the banties.

Good luck getting rain.

I love this thread!

I really like both the OP's coop and this linked one.

I'm planning to get used dog runs and outfit them for my chickens, so I can separate them and all. I've been trying to figure out how to house them separately in a coop for roosting and eggs. So now i have some good ideas.

We finished........ well as much as we can until we build the roof and get the nest boxes in. It's small but we will be adding more to the run once we get more fencing and lumber. The free landscaping timers were a little more warped than we wanted but it's sturdy even though it's crooked. Most of the rest of the lumber was scavenged off free pallets. The roost is a bit hit, just closet rod and old shelf brackets. The black construction fence fabric is there to keep Tesla from seeing the birds and getting ridiculous about trying to get into the garden.

I'm guessing you're going to put some hay or bedding into those nest boxes to make them comfy and cozy?
