Anyone experienced know what this is?

He's undisputed top rooster in a flock of about 10 (no other roosters currently, doubt he's getting picked on), they all free range, no one else has any noticeable symptoms symptoms though.

Could you get some clearer pics? From that one his legs look awful. Does he act in pain at all?

They do look pretty awful, he does not act in pain noticably. I don't know if any of these pics are clearer, but heres some from different angle. I can try to get actually clearer pics tomorrow morning.

Might be scaly leg mites. Most of the treatments for that won't hurt anything--
But I have to say that right leg, on the outside toe - that kinda looks like maybe he had a bumblefoot type abscess that blew itself up and popped out the front/top of the toe/foot.

His legs need a bit of attention. It looks as if he's got the start of a scaly leg mite problem.
Regarding the redness. This is normal in roosters. The redness becomes more noticeable as their hormone levels increase at peak mating time.

Those pics are much better.
Ok, I'd definitely treat for scaley leg mites. He's feather footed, so their scales look kinda funky even when they're healthy, but I'd do it just to be safe. Wash his legs and slather in petroleum jelly.

I also agree that he has some sort of abscess on his right foot. I'd do the standard bumblefoot treatment for that.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for the feedback. We've been catching him and giving him the spa soak + petroleum jelly + DE. Hoping this shows fast improvement, he's very hard to catch unless its grabbing him from the roost at night, we can catch him with a net but he gets really tangled up as he flails around. but we're catching him during the middle of the day, so he has time to dry off

This rooster has lived here longer than we have, and he's always had scaly dinosaur looking legs and the hugs spurs, for the last 1.5 years at least. They may not have been this gnarly the whole time, but this clearly isn't a new infestation he's suffering from. Yet we've caught every other bird in the flock, no symptoms on any one. Is that reasonable? Or would you expect every bird to have mites? they all free range together during the day and share a coop at night

Eh, they wouldn't all necessarily have SLM. Good on ya for putting in all the effort to catch him and treat him. (Little does he know it's for his own good).
Have you seen any improvement yet at all? Might be too soon, but I'm impatient. lol
