Oh what a wonderful thing. Some folks are just AWESOME!!!
My Pop didn't have much growing up. He was born at a time when unmarried pregnant women were considered trash. My grandmother was married off about 3 years after Pop was born to an older abusive alcoholic. Pop faced years of abuse and rarely had new clothes or shoes. In NJ you've got to have shoes on your feet for a good part of the year. Many times, Pop wore shoes that were 2-3 sizes too small. Because of this, my Pops feet are misformed. He has 3 "hammer toes" on each foot. The toes pushed back because the shoes were way too small.
When Pop had kids of his own, he swore they would never go hungry, nor would they ever have to wear shoes that were too small. I have been told stories of Mom and Pop eating peanut butter and jelly or a can of soup so that the kids had 3 healthy meals a day. Each year we got a new pair of shoes when school started (sometimes a new pair half way through the year depending on how fast we were growning) and a pair of flip flops and a pair of sneakers to make it through the summer. Yes we had hand-me-down cothes but NEVER shoes. We had good shoes. Remember Buster Browns kids shoes? Then on to Bass or other good shoes. He may have had to borrow a couple of dollars from one of my Mom's brothers until payday but when it came to his kids, he would have walked neked down high st if it meant they were taken care of.
