Regrouping after predator wipe-out...

I can deal with heat and humidity just using a pocket handkerchief. It takes a closet full of blankets, quilts, and comforters to deal with the cold. Thanks but no thinks.

Oh, how terrible to see that fox doing that.

I wish you the best with your new babies!! What kinds do you keep? And- LOL @ the wanderer! Too funny!

The wanderer cracks us up. She occasionally comes back by for a visit but with winter in full swing I don't expect that to happen.

We have three leghorns (no names since I cannot tell them apart), a "non standard" cochin (Henrietta), a blue silkie (Gloria), brown frizzle (Bernadette), black aruacana (Francine) and two japanese bantams with no names yet.

On Monday we are adding a light brahma (Nadine) and a gold laced cochin (Leona).

All our birds are gals :)

@Karibare ~ Yes PICS! I love looking at everyone's chooks. I don't have any yet, but hope to have some after the first of the year, or when my coop is finished.

I will have pics eventually. With winter and darkness upon us here in Alaska its not easy getting good ones inside the coop

Cold? Hah!! This is cold, 6 inches of snow and 24 degrees! No chickens coming out today I don't think.
But I would rather deal with this than the heat y'all get down there in the summers.
Its been single digits up here in AK and felt like -11 many days!

Don't know if anyone suggested this, but our vet assistant told me that even though they live right on the canyon with a ton of wild animals that come into their yard their chickens are never bothered. She said that they have a coop/run that is surrounded by a dog run/kennel and when they go out or at night they put the dog in the run. The dog can't get out or at the chickens and anything that wants to get in has to get over the fence and over the dog. Sounds like a pretty foolproof system.

Went out to give the girls a little of the huge treat bowl I made for them.. Cleaned out the fridge and fixed them up some chicken, spring mix salad, grapes, carrots, apple and macaroni- LOL. Looked in the laying box and had a HUGE honkin' egg!! It's definitely from one of the new gals bc it's not dark as Olive's, which leads me to assume its from the Red Star due to its size (my other BO laid light eggs but not too big..)

Yay!!
