Rehoming my flock :(

Quote:
Hm. I got TWO roos out of 15 sex link "pullets". Somebody wasn't paying attention at the hatchery. (I got mine from Agway, two years ago, so couldn't even call and complain to the source. I did tell the Agway owner, but what can they do? Not much!) If you do get sex links, order direct yourself, not through a farm store. How about getting pullets from your chicken-farm neighbors?

This is why I won't buy chicks from a farm store. I can't tell you the number of times I have been in our local Atwoods (similiar to an Agway) seen someone pick a chick up from the "pullets" bin and then when they are finished admiring it, drop it back in any old bin that was handy.
I buy from the hatchery.

Awww! Don't be discouraged just yet. Gritsar is absolutely correct. I see this so often I just wanna smack people right in their heads. I bought 4 sexlinks and hubs even picked up a white one and she is now my absolute favorite hen. Everyone picks on her so I mother her.

All white sexlinks are supposed to be male.

I suppose chicken dinner is out of the question? Try putting up an add at a local country store maybe? At least you'll have people close to your home and not searching the internet for anything free. *shrugs* Just keep trying. It's totally worth having such happy little ladies all over your yard laying you such precious gifts every day.

And it totally figures, my pretty EE roo who was the most shy, decided to eat out of my hand for the first time today. I spent a solid hour with them and realize I really find them very calming and I will do this again when the time is right. I was told there's a livestock auction in the area so I should be able to get some nice pullets there ( I'm told it's very reputable).

They were grazing in the garden tonight and Bossy decided to mouth off and crow a bunch so his time is up. I know zip about making him into chicken dinner, though I'd like to because he's been very well fed

I love this forum. I've learned (and am learning!) so much

Are you in a residential neighborhood or a place that doesn't allow roosters? I understand about not wanting to upset the neighbors but if mine don't like it then tough. It is just too cool to have some roos around.

As for the $70, you have already spent that, getting started is the expensive part. Keeping on is much cheaper. Getting that many roos is a bit of hard luck, it can happen. You might be quite happy with full grown hens or close to full grown hens. I bought some last year, and they did fine, plus went to laying within weeks, they were about 4 months old. THEN you know you are getting hens.

Also, they settled down with me fairly quickly. I think it helps if only one person takes care of them?
