Rehoming my roos. Heartbreaking

I bought 8 chicks at Tractor Supply. 6 turned out to be roosters. I thought I could live with them as I have 6 acres on which they can roam. My friends called my farm Hell House. You couldn't go out without getting attacked. I saved the decent roosters, Bart, Milo and Rudy and got rid of the rest on Craigslist. My only concern was that they were not used for cock fighting. A sweet man picked them up. His wife cooks them. Hey, we all gotta eat. I couldn't do it, but giving them to a nice family for free made me feel ok about it. Bart has his queen who he guards fearlessly, Rudy has hooked up with the wild guinea hens and is really cute with them. Milo is the only one that I watch, but my new puppy loves to play with him, so he's not on death row yet. Farming on any level is really tough and its not for the feint of heart. You do what you have to do keep your farm healthy. Good luck to you. It is hard to believe that something so cute and cuddly can turn out to be Satan's minions as they grow.

I still haven't figured out how giving chickens the best possible life they could ever have is exploiting them.

btw I've had this conversation with extreme vegans. They even thought that it is wrong to have any kind of pet because they are being exploited. I can't imagine having such a negative, depressing attitude towards life.

Now it's time to say goodbye and I am finding it heartbreaking. Trusting the word of a stranger that she is not going to kill my sweet bantam roos. Has anyone else had a hard time doing this? Or am I going crazy over chickens?

As much as I love watching hens raise their young, I'm going to forgo letting them do that next year out of concern that some might be roos. I got lucky this year with only 2 roos out of 8 chicks. They'll stay, but that brings me up to 5 roos. Anymore would be too much, and I don't want to have to deal with what you're going through.

I don’t eat chicken anymore because I don’t want to contribute to the miserable existence that they’re forced to endure. When I have my own property I will dispatch my extra cockerels/roosters and culled birds that couldn’t be rehomed for my family. This way the birds that me and my family eat will have a normal and healthy life with only a short bad moment. It’s much better than eating the birds from the supermarket.
