Religious slaughter Q--NOT INAPPROPRIATE!

seriously. My dh has a phd in chemistry. his boss right now is a physics professor. one of the most intelligent people I have ever met in my entire life. I have had conversations with him where he had a very hard time getting his meaning across. Conversations about our kids and my goats and chickens, nothing to do with his field. did it make me think less of him as a physicist? of course not! He is a brilliant internationally known professor! Who just has a hard time putting his thoughts into English once in a while when its not a subject he is used to talking about!

I like to think I am a fairly bright individual. I can manage our hobby farm and create many wonderful things. I woodwork, I'm a pretty darned good cook and have a degree in Biology/minor in chemistry. I speak English very well and can disassemble a building and reassemble it somewhere else. I can maintain my own small engines, I sew, and I can remove a stain in the wink of an eye, BUT if you were to ask me about my pickup, I will tell you that the big thing in the middle with the hoses coming out of it has a leak at the one hose that goes to the other part that is kind of squarish and silver. If you were a mechanic and I came to tell you THAT, would you then think I'm an idiot? Probably so. I think this guy just is out of his element with chickens. It doesn't mean I would feel he is unqualified to teach my children at the university level.

I am glad you reconnected with him and he was able to clarify what he wanted. I hope you will be able to provide him with what he wants and you get a good recurring customer out of him.

Honestly from living where Mardi Gras is a VERY big deal, and no not New Orleans, and studying religions, it is not Hindu nor Muslim. It is most likely Santeria, which is a mash of African, and Western religions. The celebrate certain saints and days that are also in traditional Western religions, but has a much more open mystical side. The colors in Santeria represent SO many different things it would actually depend on who they are sacrificing to and what for.

I would honestly go out and grab a mixed whatever brown chicken, Easter Eggers would work, and of the ophington family because you normally do not see white or red. You can even use a brown leg horn, give him a good strong healthy one with some good meat on it. The idea of a Freedom Ranger would be excellent.

Yes people do get what ever about non-Christian religions sacrificing animals. But their sacrifice is a very humane slaughter, and the worshipers must eat the meat. I see it as attributing importance of life to where there is life. I would rather that then the people who worship money and think chicken comes from behind a saran wrap and no respect for the life it was.

Here is some very basic information on Santeria, and it very strong in this region with us having so many Caribbean ties. If you show respect, acknowledge him and his religion as valid you could become a regular supplier, and considering Santeria is a community religion, and they will pay WELL. It could be a good hook up. You could openly talk to him and say is this to honor your religion because I would like to be supportive. If he says yes, ask him if there is anything else you can do to meet his religious standard. Most likely it is they are brought up with kindness in a healthy environment and live very carefree chicken lives. If that is they case go for it. I mean most of us end up putting chickens in a stew pot anyways.

Sometimes no matter your education level or no matter your ethnicity sometimes you just can't say the right words to attribute to what you mean. The other day I could come up with the word allotment, then I was trying to come up with " use the a wooden spactula" and all I could say was the flat spoon like wood thingy. A Jesuit Priest with a Ph.d couldn't come up with patriarch and kept either saying it in Latin, or saying just the father of many people. I was dying laughing. I was born in Utah raised in Missouri, I'm finishing up a degree in psychology and philosophy does that mean I can't speak the language. Or more than likely my brain was focused on other stuff like psychological cognitive ideas implicating social mores, or how minority populations except strong female leaders easier than the dominate population, or thinking about how anyone of my 7 kids are doing in life, and all that other deep family stuff. When that happens things like basic ideas drifted to the back of my mind. I wonder if that is possible to happen to someone else who is even more educated than me, their mind might even be more full than mine regardless of their native language, I guess I might be lucky to be a native English speaker else I would sound like a walking moron. Just a thought though that this mental blockage might universally happen to everyone at one time or another.

This is totally me - how to explain some of our complex systems at work in understandable terms - check. How to talk about growing our own meat and hunting - check. Explaining something about my vehicle - my IQ drops to the single digits.
