Religious slaughter Q--NOT INAPPROPRIATE!

Around here they come to the local farm auction and buy up just about every chicken for sale. The auctioneer who runs the sale at his farm lets them butcher all of them after everyone is gone. He evn provides them with boxes and bags for transporting them. Everyone around here loves it because no matter the age of the chicken it sells. An old ugly looking rooster sold for $10 last week and that is average price. The whole color thing has not been an issue. They also buy lambs and goats but never a pig. I'm only an hour drive from Dearborn Michigan and it is said to have the largest Muslim population in the US. These people are hard workers and pay with cash. Never saw a problem.

Yep, that is the way around here too, they ARE hard workers, pay honestly and they are just as Americans as we are.

What I find kind of scary about all this???? The fellow couldn't explain that what he was looking for was a slower growing chicken, but he is a PROFESSOR at a UNIVERSITY?!?!?!?!? I guess that even a rudimentary grasp of the English language isn't needed to "teach"..............

Offensive or not, I agree with this statement. I have no idea of the man's ethnicity or race. It doesn't matter to me. A teacher should be very fluent in the language he's teaching in, otherwise he can't convey said teaching effectively.

However, it could simply be that the man is not very familiar with chickens in general other than the table birds he is accustomed to and that was the reason he couldn't explain. This could happen to a native English speaker as well.

As stated, I know nothing about the man. I agree that IF someone has poor language skills he might be ineffective. BUT that might not be the case here at all. It could simply be as bolded above.

If anyone finds my statement about the fellow's grasp of the English language offensive, then so be it. Let me state, however, that I know MANY lily-white, native-born Americans who can not speak or spell standard American English, nor can they effectively communicate in said language.

I find it offensive that someone who cannot convey as simple a meaning as " a slow growing chicken" is teaching at a university.

why not ask him??? most people dont hide a religious custom if you are understanding of it. Fear of what we don't know or understand leads to assumptions and false stereotypes. Just ask him.

While I agree, I think this is getting off subject.
You could just ask the man.. and not expect and answer. Maybe he doesn't want anybody to judge him. My first thought was Austrolops or Giants for black and I think Buff Orpingtons for the yellow..They're all relatively meaty,slow growing chickens. Show him photos of them and let him know the expected size they should attain. Is he asking for specific sized chickens or just colors and slow growing?

I like to think I am a fairly bright individual. I can manage our hobby farm and create many wonderful things. I woodwork, I'm a pretty darned good cook and have a degree in Biology/minor in chemistry. I speak English very well and can disassemble a building and reassemble it somewhere else. I can maintain my own small engines, I sew, and I can remove a stain in the wink of an eye, BUT if you were to ask me about my pickup, I will tell you that the big thing in the middle with the hoses coming out of it has a leak at the one hose that goes to the other part that is kind of squarish and silver. If you were a mechanic and I came to tell you THAT, would you then think I'm an idiot? Probably so. I think this guy just is out of his element with chickens. It doesn't mean I would feel he is unqualified to teach my children at the university level.

I am glad you reconnected with him and he was able to clarify what he wanted. I hope you will be able to provide him with what he wants and you get a good recurring customer out of him.
