Relocating your pests

My husband relocates ours... with a .22 makes me sad and we are as nice as can be right up until the end - I even feed them. I cover them up with towels while they are waiting for him to get home from work -- so they aren't as scared. I just couldn't sleep knowing that they could be killing someone else's chickens.

I have relocated opossums from a heavily people populated area. I take them to a former army base where there are no homes, miles of forest, no chickens -- the opossum becomes nobody's problem. I figure since there are billions of people inhabiting every corner of the planet, certainly there is room for another opossum to live. They have a right to live too. If they aren't attacking my birds, I don't kill them. My dog sometimes does but I don't. Not illegal where I live to relocate a opossum up the road a bit.

We own a little over 65 acres. We set the traps right around the coop. If they stay away from the coop then they are fine. The way I see it - I have to protect my chickens first and foremost.

This was a hard conclusion for me to arrive at but my girls depend on me to protect them - they can't do it themselves.

++ I wish that we had a safe place to relocate instead!

Perhaps, there is a place to take them. There are lots of stupid little cities where chickens are still totally banned. I used to live in one of those. Opossums do well in the cities. They are voracious mice consumers & is often what they are hunting around the coops. As I see it, those cities could use more opossums to eat up the mice (which they have lots of & where are there are no rodent eating snakes having long ago been eradicated) & to clean up food refuse from the trash and litter (which people seem to love throwing out their windows in abundance these days without regard). Just a thought.

Relocating varmits to "stupid little cities" Sounds like a great idea. Pay those arrogant suckers back for their predudice against chickens. Just DO NOT get caught doing it! I garentee you will not like the outcome!

I relocated an Opossum I trapped in the ritzy part of town. I figure it will give the wealthier people something to talk about at lunch and they can help the economy by hiring a trapper to get rid of Peety Possum.I'm Just spicing up some peoples boring lives.

Yes. Good point! If they ban chickens, you can bet they have a city ordinance against turning loose a wild creature on their streets. Of course, they can't even prevent the dumping of tame, domestic animals so enforcement is probably nil. My former city didn't even allow honeybees, yep, even banned bees! They wouldn't have survived anyway because they sprayed the place sterile with carcinogenic spraying for mosquitos least we get WNV (like a huge fogger from trucks at night). Opossums can survive there though. Every state has these cities.

and they'd probably think it was a peculiar looking dog or cat

Best be careful, us city folk would put a collar on it feed it cat food, then feel so full of nature that we'd support introducing more bears, wolves and raptors with all the requisite federal protections.
