The seasons are a changin' and the days are gradually getting longer.
I saw my Speckled Sussex get shut out of the coop the other night at 5:45 p.m. Luckily, I was working in the garden next to the coop and was able to put her inside right away.

It was funny watching her try to comprehend that the door was actually shut. Especially since the door is almost invisible when it is shut.

So, don't forget to adjust your timers with the changing day-length.

Thanks! We call it the "chicken-horse". The girls are surprisingly civilized about taking turns, unless I put scratch on the horse head, then it's every chicken for herself.

You can get a timer with it, but we decided to try the light sensor first. We got up lots at night at the first full moon to make sure it wasn't opening. The downside is you cannot put a light in your coop with it (not even red). It will trigger the door opener. I don't usually add a light, but we had a really cold snap in December and I had 2 birds molting, so I tried to put one in for a couple nights. It didn't work, and the molting girls snuggled up with the poofy girls and were fine.

I got it here: (I have the inside install with light sensor)

That's soo funny--love the rocking horse too! My speckled sussex is always the last one in the coop also--she's like-huh! where did everyone go! every night....

Thanks! I have never heard of this, and we are going away for a week in July, it may be just what we need. We can have someone check on the chickens daily, but I just worry about having to ask them to open the door in the morning and close it at night. I don't like to ask to much.
My husband is pretty mechanical, and is working on building one. If anyone has any advice, that would be great!
