Remembering Pip-Squeak

I have locked many of your threads on this subject with a referring link here.

Thank you for the clarification, sorry for the confusion.

However, you did lock one post of mine that had nothing to do with my sick chick. She was mentioned but it was not about her...it was just a post about my chicks to show everyone pics of them.

Thanks for your help. Hope I didn't frustrate.

Jessica

Hi there. Hoping to clear up some confusion and give an update to ask for opinions.

Here is the series of events for my poor sick 3 week old chick. Buff Orpington.

First posted, crusty scab formations between the toes showed up the day after we got her:

Then scabbing got worse with cracked skin:

Started antibiotics and vitamin supplements and they didn't seem to make much of a difference.

Then I read somewhere to put tea tree oil to treat skin issues with chickens (and bumble foot). Since I had some in the house, I tried it. I applied it with q-tip a few times a day...while continuing meds and vitamins. Once I started tea tree, it got much better.

Starting to heal:

Over the course of about 3 or 4 days it got even better with the use of tea tree:

She did begin to have scabbing, probably from pecking:

Then yesterday, blood started to collect under the skin of one of her feet....if I pressed on the foot pad, the blood would squish and travel under the skin. If she roosted, the blood would collect in one spot from the pressure:

With time the blood re-absorbed into the body...leaving the foot tender and a bit puffy, but normal skin color again. I had stopped tea tree about two days ago and now we are back to the yellow scabby looking things between two toes on one foot. Not sure if stopping the tea tree caused it. I put her in a laundry basket by herself today with water and food. She is on a soft towel, I don't have paper shreds at this time, so the towel will have to suffice. I hope this is okay. I have her somewhat close to the lamp inside the brooder with the others in her laundry basket. I hope the holes will allow her comfort because she can see the rest of the chicks.

Any thoughts.

She is forming the crusty yellow stuff between two toes again...I think it's drainage. The skin on her foot is not attached to the flesh underneath. It's like a hollow pocket. I used peroxide to disinfect the yellow scabbing wound and the peroxide went inside the foot and was bubbling in the hollow pocket. She screamed, I felt really bad.

The other foot now is collecting blood as well, less than the first foot did, not sure if it will get worse. She is eating and drink but less active than the others because her feet hurt so badly.

I don't know what to do at this point. I hate to kill her.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all for me besides killing her?

Her current treatment....
She is in a box on her own...which she seems to like. She can see the others in the box, but is not with them.
She is on antibiotics.
She is getting vitamins (not biotin though).
She is no longer on pine shavings.

I am not sure at this point if I should treat her feet with ointments or not.

Did you stop applying the oil? I wouldn't do the peroxide again. That had to be painful. Can you post another picture of her current status? So Sorry about this.

Sure, I can get some photos soon.

I haven't applied the oil in about there days....however the blood was collecting in the foot during the oil treatments....so I don't know what's up.

They healed up and looked really good and then the blood and now the detached skin.

Pip-Squeak - The chick with the sick feet.
IMG_1380.jpg

Her right foot that is collecting blood. Darker red areas....if pressed on the blood will move within the food.
IMG_1373.jpg

The left foot...that had collected blood in recent photos. The blood re-absorbed. There is now a empty pocket between the outer skin and the flesh within....where it has oozed, there is a yellowish scab. The skin is slightly ripped as well, near the scab...revealing red raw flesh.

The left foot - scab.

The left foot - scab. Pocket of skin.

Here are some photos...hopefully this gives a better view.

Pip Squeak....my daughter's beloved favorite....

She now has "slight" drainage from one ear. It's not major, but there's definitely drainage. I know because the fluff by her ear is crusty.

Any ideas?

Jessica

Please help.... Is this still considered chick dermatitis?

Her ears is oozing and now she has raw red spots on her beak. Her feet look terrible. I don't know what to do. I know someone mentioned biotin....is this still the answer? I have done everything else.

Why is it that this is my first time with chickens and I get a chick with some strange disorder/disease that NO one that I know can diagnose....ugh

Is there anything else I can do?

I'm sorry I have no idea what to do - I've never seen anything like it and I don't think anyone else has either. It is obviously spreading. The post about chick dermatitis sounded like they knew something so I would try the biotin (although I have no idea what that is). Maybe you could PM the person that posted that and ask for more information.

It is most helpful to have all info and pics here in one spot though - thanks for keeping it all together. It's easier to see the progression of the diesease. Poor chick. You are wonderful to be doing all that you are. I know most people would have put the chick down by now.
