Repeated impacted crop in pullet

I have a 4 week old pullet that has what I assume is impacted crop. She had it a few days ago, I gave her a mixture with water, oil, acv and vitamins and massaged the crop until it drained. The next day she was fine. It’s been a few days since and she has the same issue again. Her only other symptoms are lethargy and she isolates herself a bit. I have separated her today but I’m wondering if she could have other issues? They do free range part of the day with their mother so I’m wondering if it’s because they can get into the layer feed and it’s not digesting? Has anyone had an impacted crop show up multiple times in a short period?

Hi,

Has the chick been eating layer feed from the start? All chickens can have chick crumbles, and chicks can have chick crumbles or all-flock, but shouldn't have layer feed until they are laying. That's due to the higher level of calcium in layer feed, and it can cause kidney issues to chicks who can't absorb that much.

I'm not saying that's the issue with the crop though although if it's not getting enough grit, which if with the mother it should be finding it, that could be causing problems.

Perhaps there's somewhere they graze that has some tough seeds. It's unusual for a chick so young to be having crop problems so something's causing it.

Here are the two best articles on crop issues.

Thank you 🙏🏼 she passed away peacefully about an hour ago. Good to know impacted crop isn’t usually happening this young. She was very small compared to the others and the rest of her siblings are thriving, so I suspect there were some underlying issues. Thank you for your response 🙏🏼

do u use grit? recently one of my birds ate Clay based grit i ordered from amazon that contains Bentonite Clay and charcoal and it cause lethargic behaviour vomit and puffy look

grit makes crop slow in my eyes which cause impaction ultimately
make sure u use grit that is small in size in limited quantities and use Prebiotic with probiotics works wonder

add some kefir it also help
