Reptipro 5000 Hatch-A-Long (=

Wow puzzler, 10? That's great & they're due the 11th which is even more exciting lol. Well it's official, I'm going to pick up some emu eggs in Ohio February 2nd & I've decided to take my incubator with me so I can buy however many I can get to fit! So I'm really optimistic about getting some emu chicks out of it, picking them up so to avoid shipping damage then the accurate temps of my reptipro . I was thinking of just ordering 4 or so already hatched chicks but I'm not sure. The farm I get chicks from sells them for $50 each then $55 shipping with a 4 chick minimum so either $255 for 4 gauranteed chicks or $200 for 8 eggs that may or may not hatch...hmmm decisions, decisions!

Nice price for those babies.. do they have a website by any chance?

I sent you a pm with their name but forgot their website so just google them, they don't publically adverise their price but I've been talking to them by phone this week so the price I said is correct.

OK, walk me through the las couple days. What day do I take them off the turners? What do I get the humidity to? Do I turn them by hand while I wait? I know to cover the gap in the shelf...anything else?

Mine are due to hatch Feb 1st and I want to be ready!!!!

I usually lock mine down about 3 days before they are due to hatch. All depends on how busy my schedule is (you are ok if you go a day or two early).
When you lock them down is when I would remove them from the turners and also stop turning the eggs.. I know some people like to hatch in the turners (and just turn them off) .. but I'm not familiar with cleaning the ones for the Reptipro.. so to make life easier I would say to go ahead and remove them.
cover the gap if you haven't done it already.. and I don't know if you use a shelf liner or not.. but I like the stuff you can pick up at walmart.. if you look at the floor in this pic it shows it.. it's rubber type stuff with little holes in it.. good for air flow but also gives the chicks some traction so it helps prevent spraddle legs (it comes in a roll so you can cut it easily to fit the shelves).

What is your humidity right now?

yinepu,

My humidity stays between 30-50%.

I'll go get that shelf liner...and thank you for the visual! (I'm a totally visual person, and I imagined the tan kind because that's what I always find in the houses I work in)

And do I need a grey cat also?

Is it 30-50 without adding any water? For lockdown I always bump my humidity up to 55-65. In my opinion 50% is a little high for the first 18 days & if mine was that high I'd ad some rice in the bottom to get it down. I was going to buy a white shelf liner to match the shelves on the reptipro but after yinepu's post I'm definitely using the dark stuff, I didn't even think of dark being better for them to see food & such, thanks!

Also Jen, I think the grey cat is a definite must haha!

I have to work a bit to keep the humidity up, and keep it up. It wants to go much lower than 25% but if I add too much then it goes way too high. But adding a titch of water every couple hours doesn't work overnight.
