Repurposing two old Silos...?

I recently saw an "Extreme Home Makeover" episode where they took the unused silo and turned it into a "goat motel" for the owners, who obviously had goats but not proper goat housing. They made ramps with several levels, since goats like to climb. It was pretty cool. You might consider something along those lines? I suppose it could even be done with chickens, perhaps.

A friend sent me an AMAZING photo of a house inside a silo. It was beautiful, and much more spacious than I would have imagined. Well laid out, with several different living spaces and a lovely spiral staircase. You may be able to find it via search engine.

You throw the silage down the chute into a cart and then pushed the cart down the bunk unloading the silage as you go....the cows lined up on either side of the bunk to eat. At least that's the way we did it. We don't use our silo anymore....we make a large pile of silage and use a tractor with a loader to feed it.

Agreed! Katy is on the mark, as usual!

I have seen missle silos and grain silos refurbished into living quarters, art studios and so forth. Search the net for missle silo living and see what pops up.

Nice property and very useable space.

If they are poured concrete, and there is no evidence of cracking or tilting, then, you can be sure they are sound...Those particular silos look to be about 12' in diameter, which would really limit your creativity.

In that case, if you chose to install floors, you would have to put in a tight spiral stair case, which only had a footprint of about 36 sq.ft., or an exterior stairs, which wrapped around the silo.

The good thing about a poured silo, is that you can cut a window or door opening, in the side, without really harming the integrity of the structure.

There is a REALLY nice remodel that we used to occasionally pass going to the feed store (changed feed stores, so I don't go by there very often any more). I believe one was turned into a garage and the other a house, with a connecting building added in between.

Several years ago in Wisconsin I saw an old barn with an attached silo. The silo was painted as a barber pole and held a barber shop (with a sign outside declaring it the world's largest barber pole). The barn was turned into a small engine repair shop.

Katy is correct, it's an open feed lot. would make a heck of a nice coop!

cilos........ sorry, no idea...other than maybe to raise up a couple hogs or something.
