Request PHOTOS of your nesting box

I have used covered kitty litter boxes and old plastic dog crates. Someimes yu can find them at the Goodwill or thrift stores.

I bought a 5 gallon bucket with the lid. Then had the bucket mounted sideways in coop. Then cut the lid into 1/3, then filled to that line with pine shavings. I will change to hay once they start laying. Will that change upset the girls? I have golf balls, but I also have a wooden egg coming. She I use the golf ball until the wooden egg gets here, or will they be upset with that change? They are very close at 18 weeks.

I cheated when needing to add nest box space to my coop and I intend on getting more when it gets nice to add to the run. Very easy to clean and totally portable, and best of all very cheap! LOL Just screwed them to the side of the coop to keep them from tipping over and put a top on them to keep anything from above from falling into the top box. You can see my built in nest box behind this one, and now they don't even use that one. LOL

They came in a three pack for $12, and I couldn't make nest boxes for that price.

Nice! Do they have trouble getting in that bottom nesting box? Do they turn it over?

No, they use all three of the boxes. there is another one above these two, and they all kind of clip together. Then I just ran a few screws through the top one to anchor it to the side of the coop. I think they prefer these because they are a little bigger space wise than the boxes that I built. My intention is, as soon as it's nice enough, I'm going to remove the old boxes from where they are mounted externally and put these in a "box" attached to the outside of the coop with a door for outside access. I just need to build the box to the proper size to slide these in and give them enough room to get into them.

This is what we built.

Here's my nesting boxes. They are the ones in the front that you just pull the door up to get the eggs.

It looks like 3 in the top nest. They must like them.
