Rescue Chicken Growth From Oil Gland

Has anyone ever seen this before? My hen seems to have a swollen oil gland with a hard substance stuck to it and the surrounding skin. We rinsed it with warm water and it did soften a little and we were able to remove some of the substance, but it made her skin bleed so we stopped to let that heal for a while. She's eating and drinking. We have her kenneled inside to prevent pecking damage and infection. Would love ideas on what caused this and how to help her!
