Rescue duck help

Pics
Yeah I have dealt with angry roosters before. Ducks don’t scare me. They dont have spurs and their beaks are nice and round. I feel bad for him. What are some favorite treats? Food usually wins over anyone, animals and people alike ;)

Oh, trust me, those wings can do some damage if they're pushed to it... plus, they have a bean on the tip of their top of their bill... it is super sharp, meant for digging, and *if* they bite they can take some chunks, lol...

Peas and mealworms are usually favorites, but each has their preferences... if you look at the thread I linked last night it has a huge list of good treats and stuff to avoid for ducks... :)

Yeah I read through the thread you tagged last night. Good info but there were so many options I didn’t know where to start. I have peas on hand and BOSS so I will start with those.
I didn’t know that about the beaks but I have been flogged by wings before. I figure as long as I go slow it should be fine. They can’t be worse than a half crazed, hormonal cockrel who is convinced that I am going to eat his girls. It wasn’t pretty. I hand raise my chicks and usually end up with gentlemen but there’s always that one roo...

Those are a good start! :thumbsup
They'll probably be fine and settle down, just wanted you aware of their capabilities... but sounds like you can handle issues if they do arise... :)

I hear swans can break a man’s arm with their wings.

Absolutely... so can a goose, turkey or a Muscovy, I would bet... wing muscles are very powerful, if hit off guard with them, they can definitely do severe and lasting damage...

View attachment 1208055 Hey guys! I have been wanting to get ducks for a while now but just got hubby to agree. Long story short I ended up rescuing a black east india duck. I’m 80% sure its a male (I wanted females because I have chickens and have heard the drakes can hurt them). I know chickens pretty well but don’t have enough experience with ducks to tell gender for sure. I have a few questions and since this community is so awesome I was hoping someone could help me out.

1) drake or duck? Terrible pic I know but he/she is freaked out and thats the best I could do today.
2) its leg is, I believe, permanently indented by the string but I don’t see a limp. Is there anything I should do or just don’t worry about it?
3) should I be worried about injuries to my hens if it is a male?
4) any special tips for a chicken lady with limited duck experience?

More info:
I have a kiddie pool set up and a deep feed dish with your standard layer pellets. Sleeping quarters are in the lower section of my chicken coop with my silkies who don’t roost either. I hope that will be ok. He/she will have the run of the yard with my silkies. Predators are not an issue. I live in the middle of town and the most threatening thing I have seen in 3 years is my neighbors cat who is terrified of my chickens, and for good reason:lau
Thats it I think. Thanks!
This looks like a Cayuga drake. The same kind I rescued not too long ago

Those are a good start! :thumbsup
