I have never given myself the luxury of a rant before so please excuse me if I have not quite got into the swing of it yet

I would like to smack upside the head the guy who owned the chickens we rescued at the weekend.

The poor little Maran is so sore she can hardly walk. I have never seen scaly legs so bad, I hate to imagine how long she has been left untreated for them to get this bad. I know they are only egg machines to some people but I just do not understand how you can look out each day and see this poor girl trying to walk and just not give a darn.

The little ROR is pooping blood and the Sussex is very lethargic, I am sure this must have affected the number of eggs they were laying, you would think if only for that reason alone their crappy owner would have given them basic health care.

this is her legs after a bath and some mite and louse treatment

This is after a bath and introduction to the hairdryer, which they loved! I was really shocked, thought they might be frightened but they stood and turned around and preened whilst I dried them. Then they sat on the couch and watched tv for a bit. I am going to worm them tomorrow or the next day as I am a bit nervous of overloading them and stressing them out by doing everything in one day.

DO NOT LET THEM NEAR YOUR OTHER CHICKENS!! if one is poopin blood, get it on corrid asap...that is a sign of cocci which can kill your flock!!! Mites can be transmitted as well. They need to be seperate for 30 days , maybe more. Oh, and cross contamination happens very easily!! Like you sit on that couch, walk into your other coop and BANG..........cross contamination

poor birds!

you need to get them onto the emergancy thread and ask speckledhen her advise on the bloody poo!!! I wouldn't worm them yet!! Treat that bloody poo first!!

I have read about mites but never seen an actual picture. There is no way anyone can think that her legs look normal. I am so thankful you rescued them

Don't panic people, we have (unfortunately) been down this road more than once. The girls are completely isolated from my flock and are on meds for the coci as I am pretty sure you are all right, that is what it looks like to me too. I am going to worm once they are in better shape. They are also getting bio yogurt, poultry tonic and apple cider vinegar to help with their digestive system. Couch is disinfected and they have been treated with frontline, which is great for killing off biddies and mites (did the dog, cats, my flock in fact anything that stayed still got a treatment)

Bless em the RIR is still laying even after all that abuse and all the stress on their little bodies!

thanks for the well wishes

Poor little things!

I agree, how hard is it to give the poor animals basic healthcare? Bless you for taking them "under your wing"! You're an angel.

They look quite cosy on your couch! Best of luck on your re-habing your new girls.
