Wow, talk about a new adventure just falling into your lap!! Getting some egg laying chickens sounds like a great idea... they are very different from meat birds. You probably have a Cornish Cross (the most popular commercial broiler) and she may only be 8-9 weeks old... that's about the age that most are processed. For your new flock, might I suggest starting with baby chicks because it's just so fun and rewarding to watch them grow and develop personalities. Just need to figure out what breeds are best for your region and how many you have room for. There's a lot to learn and actually, that whole learning process never seems to end.
