I just found this very young duckling in the middle of the street on a very hot day in San Antonio TX. My question is I have him all set up in a brooder with a warmer and game bird starter feed but there is only one..I know they are social animals like chickens would a stuffed animal in the brooder help?

Can a black bellied tree duck be housed with my four hens?
Not till it's older, chickens can put a pretty good hurting on a duckling. give it a stuffed animal and a bird mirror, [located in pet section at Walmart] till old enough to slowly be introduced to your hens. slowly means you set up a temp pen and let duckling and hens meet that way for a while so hens don't look at duckling as an intruder and attack it. Good luck and keep us updated on the lil one.

Miss Lydia do your ducks eat layer feed with your hens ? Once grown of course....
I don't use layer since I sometimes have ducklings and chicks, I use Purina Flock Raiser which can be fed from hatch till time to go on. Crumbles. I put Oyster shell out for the layers in a separate bowl and they eat as needed. Also feed greens to my flock in the form of Chopped kale Romaine lettuce, Collards etc. plus they free range. your little duckling would probably love dried meal worms add a little into it's crumble for protein since they probably eat meat in the form of insects in the wild. I'm sure it thinks you and dh are it's parents. All the best to you and the lil one. [the greens give extra calcium to the egg layers]

I too rescued & raised a Whistler. He (I think it's a boy) is 10 months old now. Let me know if you would like more info on my experience.

I started him on Flock Raiser crumbles and then switched him to the pellets. However, since all of my other ducks are females, he is now eating Purina Layena. He free ranges so he also has access to whatever bugs/insects are in the yard.
