Yawning motion means he is still absorbing yolk... just needs time...

Excellent!!

And I echo what Ruby said, amazing job making an internal pip for him... personally, I've never had any good luck doing that... no matter what happens, you did your best!

Thanks you two! your the best! I'll try to keep you updated.

I have an unrelated question: If ducklings are kept in a safe, fully enclosed (chicken wire) enclosure, could they be kept outside (under a porch). I live in southern Utah, and well... its hot lol. Our Lows are 71 or 72 at night, but our highs range from 101 to 107.

I've read they should be kept indoor (until when?), but (naively?) assume that is mostly because it gets to cool at night in most the country. That and the danger other animals can pose (hence the fully enclosed area).

So sorry you lost one.  Congrats on the others and GREAT save on this little guy:thumbsup
Ravyn and Ruby are the BEST so I'm just following along:)   FANTASTIC photos by the way!

Hey @RubyNala97
:frow I've never seen shrink wrap but I sure thought the picture of the #4 egg looked a bit shrink wrapped.  What should one look for to determine shrink wrap?

That's actually a healthy, white membrane... true shrinkwrap the membrane will be fully pulled away from the shell below the air cell line...

Not chicken wire, it's not secure enough to keep them safe... look for 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth... and I suggest an area with solid walls for nighttime as even shadows can spook them and cause them to panic and injure themselves...

Hi!! How are you? Shrink wrap is actually pretty uncommon. It happens, but I've only had 2 eggs that were truly shrink wrapped out of hundreds. when the egg is getting ready to hatch the membrane draws down inside the egg and forms around the chick/duckling. That's normal but it gets confused for shrink wrap a lot. When I first saw my first egg draw down I thought for sure it was shrink wrapped! The membrane on egg #4, still looked healthy....White and pliable. With shrink wrap it will be super tight and not pliable and almost look see through-ish. There's some good pics of shrink wrap on the Hands on Hatching thread. The two I had actually managed to pip underneath the egg in the pointy end and they made it with assistance.

How is that egg doing, @Engineer24Seven?

Thanks y'all, good to know. So glad I haven't seen it.

@RubyNala97 I'm good. Been trying to get a snapping turtle out of the big pond. I have my second duck recuperating in the tub now. AND, OMG.. might be experiencing early signs of my first drake with a prolapsed phallus

It is showing itself when he poos. No relations happening at the time, just poo. It's going back in but I'm watching him close. I couldn't keep up on the hands on hatching thread, lol. I'm still hands on but I haven't been incubating any eggs. I've had two broody Muscovy hens doing it all for me. Waaaayyy easier this way
