They don't mind her and she doesn't bother them. She sleeps outside by their coop at night and I turned the one she's in into a doghouse for her. She let's them peck at her face and doesn't even flinch. She helps herd them into their pen at night and tries to help herd them into the coop, but the door is smaller on it, so it's a little harder to get them in. But once Isabella heads in and I say good, Isabella, the others follow - soda usually ties up the line on by standing in the doorway, and I have to give him a nudge to which he squawks and if donnella isn't in before that she won't go in and they all come back out. Brats.
But if she follows Isabella in and soda is after her - it's all good cause sugar goes next and speedy rushes her in now - usually to give Soda a nip.
Last night, they were being difficult and I picked up soda to hold him cause he got locked out and was caught in the pen - he was crying so loud speedy didnt know it was me chasing him - she busted out of the coop and went to attack skye - I said speedy! She stopped looked at me, saw I had soda and stopped - donnella was right behind her, heading for skye. She stopped too. I came outta the pen cause now EVERYONE was out of the coop again. Went to sit down on the deck to cuddle soda cause he was shaking and looked up just in time to see a hawk zooming down feet first - I shoved soda in the coop - grabbed sugar and shoved her in - then speedy - I somehow convinced donnella and Isabella to quickly get in too.
The hawk flew off when I started rushing for them - I got speedy back out of the coop, she was kissing and wrapping her neck around mine as I hugged her. I was so scared in the split second
There was a little bit of a scuffle when I set speedy down in the coop - she musta nipped at everyone or something cause when I looked in and went to get the waterbowl, she was the only one in the large area, the others were in the nesting box. And the babies started kissing my arm, and let me pet them instead of running or moving away.
Just so you don't worry. I should probably mention that unless I'm outside with them, all ducks stay in the pen during the day. So, I don't worry about if they're alright or not. I spend most of the day outside with them anyhow - so they technically are free ranging while I'm out there. Skye is outside at night with them, while they're in the coop.
Skye is being super good with them, and I keep it close to heart and mind that it only takes a second. So, I'm constantly watching her while I'm out there with them. If I go inside for something she comes in too.
The babies in their new coop. I think it's to small to accommodate 5 fully grown muscovy, but it works for now... after sugar is fully grown I'll stop putting food inside with them - I'll probably still do the water since they eat the hay sometimes.
I took the side panel off to take the pictures, it latches back on with those sliding locks, and I dont worry with skye outside when they're locked it. I don't like when my mom brings skye inside because she barked at something in the yard. She doesn't bark to come in, which I like, she barks to alert. Just wish I could get my mom to understand the difference.
