Rescued hen is gonna make it! pic pg 8

Bumblefoot! Oh no. How do I fix that? Please don't tell me I have to cut her foot open and pry stuff out.
Mr Joy is one tuff bird! I hope my girl keeps her remaining toes....

Maybe this is strange, and I'm sure you don't have the time, but I wonder if you could make "artificial" prosthetic toes for the little hen.

You know how they hook up a dog with no back legs to some wheels so they can still run around? It seems like her balance would be off, so maybe some kind of triangular shaped web foot attached to her good toe, like a prosthetic foot.

Luckily, she can still stand and walk around. Her balance is pretty good, she tips one wing to the ground to right herself if she leans too far. If she looses any more toes, I'll have to make her some feet, although having her zoom around on wheels would be fun.

do the feet and legs feel cold, or hot?
I'm concerned about the blue coloring.
poor little girl..

she looks very much like my Sweetpea, but your's has more gold/buff color..
she was also a rescue, and I don't know her breed.

have you checked feathersite?

please say what all you are doing for her, other then the footbaths.(what is in the footbaths?)
are you giving her any meds or vitamins?

Big Pat on the back for rescuing these poor creatures.

BTW..I am also originally from Pa.

I've looked on Feathersite, she looks like a
Japanese black tailed buff to me, but I asked someone in the "what breed is this" and they think she's an OEG. The thing is , the Japanese DO have bluish feet in the pics......
Anyway, her feet are fairly warm.
I'm using antibacterial soap in the baths and then
alternating campho pheniqe (sp) or neosporin afterwards. (Treating for leg mites) Spotted Crow thinks she may have bumblefoot as well, which I don't know how to treat. I read you have to cut open the foot, which I won't be able to do without anesthesia (and some for the chicken too.)
What part of PA? I'm from Lansdale originally.

camphor can be absorbed and when it is , is toxic to the bird... in this case I would nOT use it. Please just use mineral oil and give her a mite treatment (ivomec eprinex)... she would benefit from a general poultry supplement

Thanks, I will stop using the Campho phenique.
For the supplement, is there a brand name that you find works especially well?

One of the few complete nutritional/vitamin supplements I know of is AviaCharge 2000 (a general supplement>meaning nothing in therapeutic amounts so complementary to supplement in feed without worry of changing the ratios in it)... it can be purchased online from McMurry Hatcheries or Strombergs. Rooster Booster is another brand of supplements (their are many different ones) but I do not know if they have brought out a genal supplement as complete like the aviacharge.
Adding wheatgermoil and offering a good quality (plain not flavored) live culture (acidopholus/bifidus) culture yogurt is also great to help boost up her system.

Meriruka,
If you don't want to buy a whole jar of Aviacharge 2000 I would be hapy to mail you a small amount for this hen. I think its wonderful you're helping these birds and I'd like to help if I can... plus I am convinced it is wonderful stuff. As dlhunicorn said, not medicine, but a really good general tonic. Email me if you'd like me to put some in the mail.

Sea Chick,
That's really sweet of you to offer. You are one of the many wonderful people on this site!
I don't mind buying a whole jar, I've got 11 other chickens and I know I will be rescuing more in the future. The good news is I found an avian vet who will see her tomorrow, so I'm hoping she will know where to get all the things I will need to patch my girl up.
Thanks again!
