This is for chickenlorena. I do want to raise her as a pet. We saved one last spring, she died in July. this one we got early enough to not let her get huge, i think. Her name is Trixie and she is very friendly. Any advice you have, I would appreciate it!...Should I put her out in the coop now?

I'm pretty confused . Somebody from next door delivered a day old CX to your yard on a rainy day ?
Oh well ..............................
I believe she's too young to avoid being pecked to death by the others if they're grown , and probably not feathered well enough to withstand the 30s on her lonesome , though they do seem to withstand and even thrive on lower temps than most chickens .
edt for spelling

It is amazing how many of these fall off the trucks. I had a friend of mine that got 3 that way. She found them in the road. They lived several years, but she said they were a little nutty. One of them would just run in circles. She thought it was something to do with their living conditions before she found them.

You can put a heat lamp out there, but meat birds generate a _lot_ of heat themselves. She may use it, she may not. Just keep an eye on her and see if she's shivering and looking more uncomfortable. Obviously the girls will use a heat lamp if it's provided - you just have to check to see how necessary it seems.

I rescued her when she was 1 day old, so she is not used to that cramped chicken house next door. The truck was delivering hatchlings raised for meat. there is over 10,000 of these chicks next door. I am raising this meat hen in a brooder I used for my bantams. I have three bantams and the new meat hen now. she is scared to death of the Bantams, for now. she will out-weigh them soon. I took her out today to the chicken cabin I have seperate from the others. she stayed out by herself all day and did just fine. I will not leave her out at night until a few more weeks (I.m waiting on all her feathers to come in). She is a sweety, most meat hens are.

So you have a dayold chick from next door....neighbors chick, why didn't you give them their chick back. I would be upset if someone took one of mine, no matter how many I had or just because i was going to eat them.

She is now your pet?...but she legally belongs to the owners of the chicken house she wandered away from...whether or not you agree with the raising of meat chickens, if you knowingly "rescue" someone else's bird, it is still their bird and you are stealing.
