Rescuing dogs from swap meets

Over the weekend, I went to a local animal swap meet with 2 others from our (small dog) rescue. The month before, I had 2 dogs given to me that needed homes. (One was a breeder, the other a stray) They are now in foster homes and doing well.

Our group met 2 other women from another rescue group, and started comparing notes. They go to ALL the swaps in the area to buy up dogs at a reasonable price, then put them into their rescue. They have saved many from the puppy millers that way.

Does anyone here do this?

Most dogs that are brought to the auction I go to are 'oopses', puppies from mama's that the owners are too cheap to spay, and too dumb to pen up when mama is in season. Very rarely are there any purebreeds there. Wish I could do something like this here, but I don't know of any rescues in my area, and I sure can't afford to feed extra dogs!

Good luck, and I hope you save a lot of them!

I'm not saying we will get any dogs there. We are going to LOOK at the situation. I have been there many times, so I know what to expect. Most of the gals in the group have no clue, and it will be heartbreaking for them to see. This is one of the biggest swaps in the area, and its the last one, so we decided to go.

I am skeptical to get any critter there......with disease & all. You don't know what's out there. Maybe we can rescue the retired breeders (thats what we do anyways), and prevent them from having more pups.

if people would realize that all these "cute" puppies are being dumped in dog pounds and put to sleep because of over crowding they wouldn't think it was so cute anymore.
There are programs out there to assist in spaying and neutering your pet you just have to find them.
Accidents do happen but they shouldn't happen 2-3 times a year.

When you go to the swap meets, you ought to go armed with spay/neuter vouchers (if you have access to any) or a listing of phone numbers of area places that perform spay/neuters either free or very low cost. You could also include statistics about how many dogs/cats are euthanized yearly etc. That way you are not only helping those that you come across but helping to educate and stop the 'unwanted' or 'breeder' litters.
Yes, I am in animal rescue and have been for close to 18 years. We have a wonderful organization here, and I think it's fairly widespead, called UCAN. They do a wonderful job with spaying/neutered as wel as educating the public about why all pets should be spayed/neutered. There is another called Neuter Scooter. I haven't dealt with them but they do something similar.
Thanks for doing what you do. It's a shame we can't save them all !!!!!!

I've always said that if those who have the cute puppies or cute kittens were made to volunteer in a 'kill' shelter then they might think twice about 'allowing' the unwanted litters to happen.
Spaying/neutering is such a small cost compared to that of supplying feed, vet care etc to litters. I'm not saying everyone is like that, just those who are careless in allowing the 'oops' to happen and often.

we do it to. Except we used to go to kill shelters and get the ones about to be put to sleep and ones that arnt agressive. We dont do it anymore seeing that the puppy mills on craigslist rather flag our ad so they can keep their ads up. Still trying to find homes for the poor doggies.
