Resisting Chicken Math...

Adorable!!! Love, love, love!

I'm struggling with temptation, too. I was at the feed store, and they had Polish, Austrorp, and Ameraucana pullets. They were probably Easter Eggers, but whatevs. I want to add all three of those breeds to my "collection," but I have 8 right now: 4 year old hens, 1 five month old pullet, 2 three month old pullets (I think pullets), and 1 three month old cockerel. I have room, but Hubby would kill me...

My boyfriend was the one trying to encourage ME even thought I said our coop isn't big enough! He was like, they'll figure it out :gig He is going to be a bad influence in the future for sure. Do you find it difficult raising them when they're all different ages like that or is it pretty easy to deal with?

Do you believe the farm store knows the genders for sure? No customers mixed them up by accident? Or they reallly truly kniw how to sex chicks? Or they're not lying? There's millions of stories about the inconsistency of farm store sexing of chicks.

Oh I'm sure mixups happen. I am wary of one of our 5 being a cockerel right now, and there is like a 95% accuracy guarantee from MyPetChicken where we got them. But the store also had unsexed bins, so why bother separating the pullets at all if they were just BS'ing about it? If it happens, I'd probably get rid of him before he crows anyhow...

Not easy at all! Right now, the 3 three month olds are separated in their own coop and area of the run. All 8 free range together fine for the few hours I let them out each day, but they don't really get along. The pullet was raised by one of the older hens, and the poor thing is waaaaay at the bottom of the pecking order. She has become rather neurotic. I plan on trying them out in the run all together in a couple of months.

I will say that having the cockerel helps. He's assertive, and he stands up to the hens well (even though he's a teeny weeny little Sebright). He puts himself between the other babies and the hens. So far, I'm quite happy with him. I think having him around is actually helpful. I'm hoping he will learn to put my big girls in their places.

Aww that's nice that the cockerel is helping! I'm actually interested in having one in the future, I hear they can be a big help managing the hens and also as predator alert. I hope yours ends up helping manage the bigger girls too!! :)

Be honest.
Is there a part of you that still kind of wants to go back for more chicks?
If you said yes, then yeah this is how it is going to be forever.
Oh, and eventually you stop resisting and just build coops.
Welcome to the darkside.:p
TRUTH. Even Hubby was like, "We can add more next year." This from the man who said we'd stop at 4. I only have 8, and I've built only 2 coops, but...
You....can't.....resist....the CUTE!
:goodpost:

Chicken math catches me even when they don't have chicks at the store, as I have roosters in the clock, Last year finally figured out the incubating at my elevation, and had 14/17 hatch, while I was doing that a hen decided to sneak in a brood and hatched out 6 more lol

Went to the farm store today and they had several bins of a few-day old pullets... I didn't think I would be tempted because I figured they'd be unsexed and I can't have roosters where I am so the risk isn't appealing. But most of them were sexed! I was so tempted to take home at least an olive egger chick.... But I have 5 chicks that are a week old already and our coop just isn't big enough for any more. I can't justify making a bigger coop before our babies even grow into the first coop :gig But it was very tempting. Is this what my life is going to be like for the foreseeable future?! Haha.

Also I'm feeling "empty nest" syndrome today, I moved the girls out to the little office room in the garage... Steps from the house but they have been 3 steps from my desk the past week. I miss their peeps. But they're feathering in and getting messyyyyy! I am happy they all seem to be healthy so we've started naming them :) Attached is a pic of their first outdoor excursion yesterday... In a box because the Run isn't built yet haha. (The coop is done, at least.)

Now is the perfect time to get more chicks. You can build another coop while they are in the brooder and it will be ready and waiting!:D
I’m an instigator.
