Respiratory treatment. Respite?

The chickens will drink the right amount of the mix for their weight and age when it is mixed 1 tsp per gallon. Tylan is pretty good for some bacterial respiratory diseases such as mycoplasma (MG.) Denagard is used more in flocks with repeated bouts of MG to treat and to prevent recurrance. I would just see if the Tylan works. If it is just an outbreak of infectious bronchitis which spreads like wildfire through a flock, then it will have to run it's course over 3-4 weeks. IB usually just has the more mild signs of sneezing and runny nose, and maybe a decrease in laying temporarily. Antibiotics don't affect viruses, but may help to treat any secondary bacterial infections.

Eggcessive, yes -- I am near certain it's IB because now everyone has symptoms and it spread very, very quickly. We went from three to the entire flock in under 24 hours. The whole lot of them are sick!

I was resisting using the Tylan because I knew antibiotics don't work on viruses and stuffy noses are a virus.

We had a bantam Cochin last year that died and we had a necropsy performed. The report confirmed traces of IB, but the actual cause of death was kidney failure. The lab suggested she survived the IB, but it reached her kidneys before completing its course.

So if the Tylan can at least prevent or reduce the spread of any infection inside their bodies, then I believe it's worth the effort. At least I hope that's how it works.

How did things turn out for you and your flock? I have a very similar situation and am stressing.
