He will forever remain a legend on BYC! My favorite Nugget story is the skunk and blue rooster.

I hope you forgive the references to "she" as nugget of course was a most gentlemanly bird.

My sympathy for your loss.

I came late to the Nugget stories, but they provided me with considerable entertainment. He was quite an amazing character and his death is a significant loss.

I have to believe that God who takes note of a sparrow's fall has a place prepared for our pets.

That is so beautiful, I've never seen it before and I love it.

Thank you all for your thoughts and your sentiments, your remembrances of Nugget. He did touch a lot of people, he was such a gentle giant and it was so fun to watch little kids stop to see him and I'm trying to get hold of a picture I had of him standing next to this little toddler. The mom stopped to ask her daughter could touch a chicken because she'd never seen one before, she picked the "big red one". She was standing next to Nugget and he was about 2 inches taller than her!
We are going to bury our big red one today, and he's taking all his favorite snacks with him. He used to get mad at Woo when I had her little apron on her, I think it bothered him because he didn't know what it was and he'd try and pull it off of her. I was thinking this morning of when Woo and Nugget were babies and we thought Woo was the roo and Nugget was the hen, and Woo disappeared one night. We walked acres for hours with Nugget in our hands screaming for her and we never found her. She turned up the next day or two with wounds like she'd been grabbed and carried away. It was shortly after that we found out they were the opposite sex and suddenly Nugget started growing into a giant and Woo stayed a tinier than usual banty lady. But they were bonded to the end and Woo won't look at another roo.
Puddy had steak and taters for dinner and he kept watching for Nugget to try and steal his mashed taters, I have to wonder if Puddy knows he's gone. Babette duck loved him so much and since she is afraid of the other ducks she would sleep snuggled with Nugget, Tux, and Woo. Nugget would always make Babette a nice bed in the straw, and he didn't care if that hen was a bit funny looking at all! He made sure she a got fry before the other ones did.
It's going to be a different world in the yard now. I did start writing though, what I'm envisioning as a children's book: Nugget the Big Red Rooster.
