Results of my first 3 hatchings.... mystery auction eggs... oooooh lord help me!

There is a poultry auction in Enumclaw every Saturday at 11:00. Everything is stuffed in boxes and you don't know what's inside in advance. Like Amy has pointed out, you have to take the seller's description with skepticism and you might be in for a bit of a surprise when you get home.

Enumclaw? Oh my gosh, you live close to me! I buy my eggs from 3 Roses Farm in Puyallup, the owner Dan breeds the best quality Call Ducks I've ever seen. I wonder if he sells his eggs there?

If he has quality eggs and ducks, I doubt he sells them at the auction. You really don't know what you are getting if you buy there. I've never been to any other auction, but Enumclaw is a bit on the "dirty" side. I'd feel OK getting eggs from there, but if you got ducks or chickens they'd need to be quarantined for sure!

Is it just me or does that seem kind of...awful? Sounds like a den for unscrupulous sellers and scammers.

be prepared to laugh your tail feathers off...... I picked up a couple of tabletop incubators and decided to try my hand at hatching some mystery eggs from the auction house. They were sold as "Silkies X Sarama eggs" Naturally one thinks "ok that might be a cool mix and tiny" ummmm... they failed to mention they were also frizzle AND turken mixed as well. OOOH my lord. The first egg hatched out and it was a grey silkie turken. Face palm. Next one: Black silkie turken. Then a white silkie... turken (with very dark skin!) and then came the frizzles... and the turken frizzles. And and .. and... Good lord help me. I hatched mutants!! Anyone want some really REALLLY tiny freakish looking babies?! Figured this COULDNT POSSIBLY happen twice. Right?? so I bought another 2 dozen eggs. Hatch day arrives... oooh crud. Same weird combo. Of all the hatching eggs available for sale I probably bought from the same seller again. Third try's the charm right??? Isnt that what everyone says? So I buy 6 dozen eggs and finally hatch day comes. I ended up with 9 black astralorps (look pretty much as advertised) and then... TURKENS AGAIN!!! The one breed my husband said no to. Now I have dozens. Oops Sorry honey! He really is creeped out by them. The real problem... my buyers look at them and cringe too. Any one besides me think they are so ugly they are kinda cute? Probably pretty inbred too. ;) Husband has banned me from auction eggs cause he says they will die of old age before I manage to sell any of them.... First Hatch: Second Hatch: (oh look something different... barred rock.... no wait its a turken.. ohh and a roo... *FACEPALM!*) Third Hatch: Oh lord. And its got a crest....wtheck
i do I have been searching for them in Canada with no success. i imagine you live in the US which makes it almost impossible to get them. i think its an interesting mix the F2s may be even more intwrwsting holding on to a few of the aquired highlights :) **** I def woulda taken as many as you woulda sold.

You should go there once just to see it. You can make your own opinion...I couldn't think of another word for it other than "dirty" but that isn't exactly what I wanted to say. My chickens are pets as well as egg producers. I care what happens to them. The people at the auction are looking for different things and you don't know if they are going to a good home or not. I'm sure some of the roosters end up in cock fights, while others end up in the freezer. It is the circle of life, but I'd like to know my chickens were treated well before the end. I'm probably way off topic here, but you should go see it and let us know what you think. ;)

I partially agree but if cross bred chicks are ok then what ever. I agree though don't go expecting pure show quality but I've been surprised before!I almost only buy hatching eggs. Occasionally I get chicks but they are rare and I probably won't again. Too big of a risk to my home flock. I also wear different clothes, showeR and chAnge and sterilize my shoes before going near my birds again. (Auto incorrect on my kindle is acting up sorry!) I don't buy adult birds but I do sell crocodiles.there because I can't seem to find any takers and I don't want tons of noisy rooster s.

If anyone's interested I'm taking a sultan rooster and an bunch of Turkencross boys in tomorrow. And a pair of blue splash swedish ducks and a black swedish (what he should be anyway) they are beautiful but too loud! If you want them let me know. I focus on raising pulleys and eggs. Not roosters. Lol.

Big hatch is now underway. 23 so far. Looks like we have some blacks some blues a few reds ,some feather footed. Looks like a few may be silkies too. ;)I love mystery eggs never know what you will get. So far my pulley customers have loved them. Most have sold by 16 weeks.

If anyone wants boys let me know... ill accept anything for them.

Sorry for kindle acting up I miss my laptops much
Gerrard !!!!! I giver up

Hatch results! Set 10 dozen standard eggs, 2 dozen bantam, and 1 dozen silkies.
Had some issues with fertility and then the heatwave here made our rooms temp spike. Lost some eggs that day :(

But I'm not upset with the results though....

Breeds are a guess at this point.

17 black australorps (?)
31 reds (red star ish?)
16 white feather legged
5 blue feathered legged
3 black feather legged
1 chipmunk feather legged small bantam (runty) - from my silkies
1 black clean legged bantam
1 black silken bantam (late hatch)-from my silkies
1 black/silver/grey silkie bantam-from my silkies

180 were set, 116 fertile, 85 survived the heat spike, 76 total hatched= 42% hatch rate. Should have been about 75 but the heat spiked :(
I think my incubators suck :(

My black silkie girls are with a partridge cochin rooster and a shy silver laced cochin rooster. I've only seen the partridge breeding.

I am going this weekend to check it out. I need to get this incubator thing down so i am not going to get babies that i REALLY want until i can improve my incubating skills.

for improving my skills without a broody at the moment

You should be able to get some cheap eggs for sure. I bought mine on craigslist since it is an "experiment" and my first time with broody hens. I hope your incubator works for you!
