Rhode Island Red Roo or Hen???

400

Here HE is @ 10 weeks. Keeping updated for those who are curious. He's also practiced mounting hens...

Looks identical to my ten week old chicken. I'm thinking he's a roo too. I only hatched out two, and his lone sibling looks very henny in terms of her tiny comb and wattle. I'm hoping at least she's a hen, because I need another hen. I could use one extra roo, so my young roo is safe with me. He's not going into the pot.

I just took this picture of my two ten week old chickens. These two are both the product of a Rhode Island Red/Black Australorp crossing. The one that looks like a Rhode Island Red I suspect is a roo. The black one I suspect is a hen, as she has essentially no wattle or comb. What say ye all?

PS They hatched within a half hour of one another, and remain inseparable.

I agree that the red one looks like a rooster, with that red comb, thick legs, and shiny, possibly pointed tail feathers. But the black/red one is a pretty little hen.

Yes, the red one appears to be a cockerel, and the black one looks like a pullet.

My young roo could likely pass confirmation as a pure Rhode Island Red, but he's half Australorp by his dad. Funny how that can happen. His one and only nest mate, the black hen, is also half and half, but couldn't pass as a pure Australorp due to a rusty chest and neck.
