Rhode island Red rose comb

Thank You Turbo and Henhaven for the links. These are bit expensive $4 a chick. Thank You all for all the great information.

Repobob I think the temperment is the RIR in general. I keep running into post about if they get scared they die. I do not know if these is a line or a hatchery these birds are coming from. But the SC is what I am reading about in these cases. They might be production RIRs so hopefully we might here from more on this.

Here are some pictures of my RIR. Can anyone confirm first off that they are a male and a female. Any other comments are welcome. Like I said before I'm just gettingh started and can use any advice.
Please excuse the messey coop, I'm remodeling.

Ok I think you probably will never get an egg out of those two rooster.....seriously dude I think they are both roos..I'm sorry.

RepoBob;
Breed one rooster to regular RIR hens, take the offspring (they should all be rosecombed) and breed to the other rooster.
Cull all straight combed birds, and you will have a good flock of Rosecomb RIRs in three years

, You know, I had a feeling, because their body shape is so similar. What are the signs that one is not a hen? Or to put it another way; how do you tell the diference? When I had them in the flock with the BO's they never asserted themselves either toward the roosters or hens. One of the BO Roosters that was in the pen is pretty big and has attitude, the other just kinda hangs out and waits til the big guys not lookin. When the RIR's were in the main pen one would be in the nesting box with the other on the nesting box perch. That made me think the were a pair. I guess I have two wimpy Roosters. Any body in Illinois got a couple RIR hens that are looking for a short but meaningful affair;)

wclawrence, thank you for the stragedy. I'll be looking for some RIR hens at the shows this spring and get started. In the mean time, I have some nice looking white & black pullets I got from a friend (don't know the breed) that I could breed with the RIR just to try to get some pretty birds. That wouldn't hurt would it? I don't want to put them back in with the BO's and could use the breeding cage for a known pair of BO's. Thanks for showing me the light at the end of the tunnel. I was bummed til I read your post.

The combs are too RED. They look like males to me too and I do not even own a chicken yet. Repobob if you look at the pics here in the forum you will see the differances between the males and females. After you look at a few different breeds and there combs you can tell pretty easy.

BTW female rose comb is smaller than the males also much smaller and pinkish.

They both look like they have saddle feathers. (The long ones that hang down before you get to the tail feathers. They are beautiful birds. I have 1 roo, a single comb RIR, and this morning I had to put Vaseline on his comb to guard against frost bite. He already has a couple of tiny black tips on his comb that I just noticed last night when I was doing my chicken chores. Rosecombs would be well worth breeding to alleviate this particular problem.

Cybercat: Thanks for the tips. You know, I've looked and looked at the pictures and just don't see it. Guess that's why I ended up wit two roo's

. I think I need to go to a few shows or swap meets and see the birds upclose. Guess you are gonna have to wait for those eggs. I do plan on doing as wclawrence suggested so keep in touch and we'll see how it goes. If you run across any rose comb hens let me know. There are a few shows up here in the spring both Northern Illinois and Eastern Iowa so maybe I'll find something.

Hoosierhen: Hens don't have saddle feathers? So, hens would be more rounded below the tail feathers? My big Orp Roo has a giagantic comb, and I noticed small black spots this morning. Guess I should coat it. Thats gonna be fun, he hates to be touched. Even after I have him in my arms he never settles down like the hens do. If they do get frostbite does it heal? do the black spots go away.

Now I gotta figure out where to put them. I would like to use the pen for my Buff Orps. The RIR's just got use to that coop. I hate to move them again. I was hoping not to have to do any more construction til spring. Man, this hobby can get outta control quick.... gotta love it.

Repobob,

Not to worry I can wait.

Sometimes it is hard to see differances in something you see every day. Also some of us have what is called the eye. Which means we see every detail. Another term for it is photographic eye. The way I learn was looking at the next forum down which is what sex/breed am I? You can learn to see the minunte differances there, it just takes time a good resolution on your moniter.

BTW your birds are very lovely.
