Rhode island Red rose comb

I was reading the other RIR thread and this question came to me once again. Has anyone seen the rose comb RIRs? I have not found any for sell. Are these now just breeder only birds and real rare or is there a hatchery that carries them?

Accroding to what I have read they are suppose to come in both the single comb and the rose comb.

Whenever I see someone mention a rosecomb RIR, I think of Buckeyes and wonder if that's really the bird they have. There is a member on here that said they had or did have a Rosecomb RIR, but I don't remember who it was.

There are real rosecomb R/R chickens out there. I have a hen that came from Bruce Wayne in Bardstown, KY, also Shady Lane Poulty in Kentucky sells them, they have a website.

My rosecomb is really deep dark blood red, darker than most of the single comb R/R I have seen

I tried to get into the shady lane site earlier today with no luck. It would not finish loading got stuck with 2 items to go. I tried 3 times but shall try again.I found the link to it on another site.

I have an interest in these since they are rare. The buckeye has a pea comb and not what I am looking at here. I was reading my FFA chicken book and they mention them, which was why I starting to look for them. I have an interest in the heritage/rare breeds. RIR with sc is common which is why I was thinking of the rose comb wich seems to be extremly rare.

I dont think you will be disapointed in them, if I had a roo I would hook you up with eggs, but I have enought varities of chickens as it is without add on.

I think I have a pair of Rose Comb RIR. I'm just getting started and bought them at a show in Iowa. They are very dark red. I wish I knew more about the breed, but these seem to be very shy. I had them in a 8x12 pen with 6 BO 2 of which are Roos) and they always stayed together away from the other chickens. I never really seen any serious agression from the BO's. The RIR's would usually stay up on the nesting box perch or in the nesting boxes while the BO's wondered around pecking at the straw. About 2 weeks ago I built a pen for them. It is shaped like an L and is about 2.5 ft wide and 5 ft long on one end 4 on the other. They have a small roost where they spend most of their time and two nesting boxes that they ignore. Which brings me to the reason for this long winded discription.

I'm not trying to horn in on your thread, but I have yet to get and egg, while my BO's are laying almost and egg each a day. Now what I'm thinking is if you guys can help me get these guys to lay I would be happy to share some eggs. They are some very pretty birds. I hope to get some pictures later today.

I'm in Illinois so its been very cold the last week. They are in an insulated coop, the lights are on to extend their daytime, I feed layer feed from Tractor Supply, they get plenty of treats (table scraps, cracked corn, sunflower seeds, etc).

Is there anything else I can do to help the egg production? I'll sing to them if necessary

No problem but your fly had me going there for a min thinking it was on my screen.

Something I read on another site is that RIR are easily stressed. Someone mention the slightest scare and they die. Is this true or is this a line thing?

Bob try a higher protein food it might work. I have run into alot of posts where chickens have not been laying until there protein was kicked up 20 or more.

I had RIRs and I found them to be quite hardy.

cybercat, Yea thats the same feeling I had when I first seen the fly. Its not something you leave on to long. At first it cute, but then it gets annoying. It will be comming off soon. Maybe I'll use my RIR pictures I hope to take later.
They seem like they can be stressed easily, they are kinda timid and nervous. They seem healthy, at least to me. They are active when I come to feed. Don't think I'm in any danger of them dying from stress, but they do seem high strung. They seem just as hardy to the weather (cold) as the BO's. I will get a higher protien feed, 20 or more later today. They really do not seem to be eating much of their feed which is available 24/7, but they readily devour table scraps. Wonder if I should lay off the scraps and treats so they will eat more regular feed. At present the RIR get the same scraps and treats as the BO's and they are laying well. Maybe this is why they are rare.
