Rhode Island White thread :)

no hatchery bird is a true breed. so you should not expect to get true pure bred chicken from a hatchery just pet quality production birds. they just call them "Rhode island reds" or "buff rocks" they would be production birds that look similar to them

My RIW's are huge and have the brick shaped body. They are excellent winter layers but not so good in the Summer. Mine are the true rose combed variety.

So, I am correct in my cynicism that if one orders and purchases Rhode Island Whites from a given hatchery, it is possible, if not probable, that your birds could be either a White Plymouth Rock or a Rhode Island White?

So why would hatcheries even offer the birds if there were no possibility of proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the birds are said breed. Seems a bit like a bum roll for the purchaser.

I'm not saying your birds are not RIW Rareroo, but I cannot understand why one would pay more for a "rare" breed when it's perfectly plausible to believe the hatcheries are, in essence, lying to the consumer.

punky, please understand that I am not a novice at hatcheries, just attempting to figure out why a hatchery would sell single combed birds, that have the same characteristics as another breed yet continue to sell it as a different breed especially to those who do not understand the different breed characteristics.

to make more money and there is a possibility that what they call "RIW" are their "white rocks" most white hatchery birds probably have leghorns mixed in them to enhance laying
