Rhode Island

Hey Rhode Islanders! I wondering if anyone who homeschools in RI can give any advice on getting started?
I have a 4 year old who will be 5 next June. Always planned to home school. Even before 2020.
I know this isn’t about chickens but I figured I’d give it a shot.

Hello RI Chicken Tenders!

Does anyone raise chicks and sell "point of lay" hens? I'm going to be in the market for a good number of them come spring, and figured I'd try here before I went to Craigslist.

If you're going to be raising chicks, would love to hear about costs, quantities, breeds, etc.

Drop me a line!

I’m anxious to see if anyone answers this!
I don’t have luck with RI questions.
Good luck!

It's fairly quiet on here, for sure. Although I did manage to buy the pinkest chicken tractor ever on here last summer. You should have seen me driving down 295 with it in the back of my little pickup truck! I can only imagine that the only reason I didn't get a ticket was that the police wanted nothing to do with me. :gig

I WOULD HAVE LOVED TO SEE THAT!!!!

YEEESSSS!!!! That’s classic!
How do you like that style coop? How often do you move it? What do you do in the winter with the snow? How many chickens fit comfortably inside?

I like the coop. I bought it for what I thought was a very reasonable price without really a plan to use it, but knew I couldn't pass it up.

Right now I've only two chickens in it, but I bet it'd fit 4-5 comfortably. If I just wanted them to pick at the grass a bit, I'd move them every day or two. But I'm actually using them to decimate the lawn , so I can go behind the tractor and lay down a thick layer of compost, then seed to grass. Because that's my plan, I'm leaving it in place for 2-3 weeks at a time. They really leave the ground barren and turned over in that time.

I'll put these two chickens in with the rest of the flock in the big coops for winter, probably within the next week. Someone will get a turn in the tractor come spring again.

Since I create a lot of compost in my chicken system, I figure this is a good way to go about reseeding the lawn while removing the existing grass and weeds, adding a lot of nutrients, and most of all, letting the chickens do most of the work!

That’s the best idea. Let the chickens do all the work for you! When I find my new house I plan on having a couple different coops. Until then I have just a small one with a few bantams.
What town are you in?

Yeah, that's how it starts. I started with 6 chickens and a 3 x 5 coop. Now I have four coops (the largest is 20' x 8'), plus the chicken tractor. In the spring, I'm looking to get back up to (or a bit over) my high water mark of 70 birds. Chicken math. It's a whole thing.

I'm in West Greenwich.
