Hi there! New urban chicken farmer here in Johnston! My husband brought home 13 one week old chicks last week from Tractor Supply and I've been taking care of them. We thought they were 13 ISA Browns but it turns out one was a RIR mixed in. We had a bit of a scare the first night with the RIR and an impacted crop, but thanks to this website I was able to revive her and she's the craziest of the bunch. She's on the small side, but feisty as ever.

I made a coop that will fit four hens, I don't plan on keeping more than that, out of pallets and need to work on a run. I'm trying to do everything out of recycled materials a) for the economy of it and b) to reduce our footprint. I'm hoping we can be mostly self sufficient in three years time with a garden, chickens, and next year some meat rabbits. I'm learning to hunt too.

I'm next door in Ct, but welcome to the group!!!

Welcome neighbor! Everyone's your neighbor in R.I.:D
This site is a wealth of information. It is here that got me through my first year.
We did a run built entirely of used pallets. It looks really nice. It really looks like a fence when lined up. Good luck!

Any tips on the run out of pallets? My father mentioned rats are going to be a problem since we're in the side closer to the city. I want to keep these babies safe once they get outside, but also spend a slittle money as possible.

Rats are going to be a problem no matter where you are. I’m in the country and have a bit of a rat issue. Put your food up at night and put out bait stations to get them early.

For the run, hubby screwed the pallets together. This particular run, one side is for hens, the other side roo's. The middle separator wall is one pallet on top of another then screwed. We did place a pitched type roof over it so there are 2 x 4's, the only thing we bought for construction of this pen. The swinging doors, exterior and interior are also pallets.

Good advice. Fortunately, I don't have rat problems. I do know my neighbor does. I don't want to invite them over to my place so I am vigilant in looking for signs daily. My neighbor has open food sources for their animals. I'm hoping the pests are kept fat and happy over on their property and kept their problem. My food supply is securely stored in tote type containers. Recently, I had a mouse chew a hole in a cover that housed food, I placed a trap inside the container and no more mouse. I felt bad, it's a tiny mouse but they carry disease. It's the mouse or my chickies. Mouse losses every time.

welcome to the site, i live in Richmond RI and have 26 hens 2 roosters and 69 baby chicks from 3 days old to 6 weeks that i hatched myself in my Genesis 1588, i love to watch the chickens free range and incubating, it is surprising to see what hatches but i need to downsize soon.

Hi all. I'm looking to re-home a rooster. Not sure the breed (he came in a batch of black sex link pullets from TSC). Hes 12 weeks old and finding his voice. Any help would be great.

Hi :frow I see this thread is really old, but, does anyone know of a breeder in RI that would have EE chicks available sometime through late April into May? Thanks for any info!

Hi MissMaple :)
I just ordered a variety of 6 chicks from https://www.meyerhatchery.com they usually have a nice selection and even better is they have only a 3chick min for shipping...which is nice and not easy to find lol. Good luck hun
