I am pretty sure land isn’t the issue. People keep bees on rooftops in cities and they forage wherever - I guess in parks. I think you need a lot of ‘stuff’ like a bee suit and a smoking thingy. I am thinking of taking lessons from someone local. Well that was in the BC era (Before Corona).

I would want to be trained as well. I just can't see adding that too my workload right now. Someday

Loved the mention of beans on toast. I don't have a toaster but when I have nothing decent to eat I have beans on wheat bread. Not one of my finer meals but it keeps the stomach from growling too much.

Beans on toast with a fried egg on top. Now that is what I call breakfast!

I've had the "hair" in the food bit also. My brother tried to convince me it was my own hair. I have WHITE straight hair. this was blond and wavy. I walked around to see exactly who was making up the servings. Sure enough a blond - long unruly hair and NO hairnet. I planned to give it to her and say "I think you lost this." But my brother said he'd drive away without me.

Oh, yes, I pay people to do the stuff I'm really bad @ too ~ like my tax... & building stuff. But there are a lot of simple skills being lost because people can't be bothered. One that deeply shocked me [& I've no idea if this is a universal trend] is when my older kids first left home & informed me no~one cooked because they didn't know how, not even basic things like beans on toast or a boiled egg. They lived on take~away. I hate cooking. For me it's absolute drudgery but I do know how & when I put my mind to it, I'm a good cook. So are my kids. I considered it a necessary survival skill. Most of my kids actually enjoy cooking ~ but they like to eat & they like to eat well! Too many years of watching mum paint & cook & worrying what was actually ending up in their meal!

I've cooked for most of my life. My father sort of taught me and certainly encouraged me to do it. I can also sew and I used to be able to do basic knitting.
I didn't get into the take away lifestyle no matter what my work hours. I used to occasionally eat out but in general I found that the food wasn't much better than that I could cook myself.
The last time I ate out was about four years ago unless one counts the annual community suppers we have here and even then you have to take a dish with you.

I don't think you need a lot of land for a hive or two ~ but then I don't know about honey bees. Our natives [as in the species we have] only forage about 500m from their hive. If you've plenty of food nearby that's what they'll harvest. Once upon a time most country people kept a skip or two but like so much else people would rather pay someone else to do the work for them even if the end result is poorer quality. One of my cousins used to do bees & honey straight from the hive doesn't taste anything like what you get in the shops. Even the colour is different, so much darker. I've got to paint the new hive apparently. It's a little smaller than our present one & the man has already gone online to order another & a starter colony. This could get out of control fast...
