Ribh's D'Coopage

It's a comfortable 24C here right now. Was 1C when I woke up this morning. Funny, at your temp, we went to work in Saudi wearing short sleeve shirts and the gate guard was wearing arctic wear.
Yeah. I remember my Poppy telling about his 1st winter in Sydney ~ straight from the Scottish Highlands. He was wandering round in shorts & Ts. Couldn't believe all these Aussie were rugged up against the cold ~ until his 2nd winter rolled round! :lau He moved further north.:gig

A flock is a strange thing. They have their pecking order & it is rigid. Just when I think I have things worked out it gets weird on me.

Take the roosting. By all accounts the older girls should be on the top roost with all the lower order newbies huddled together on the 2nd roost ~ & that's certainly how they started out. Then it was Wrold, lowest of the low, who was left to roost alone on the 2nd bar. Recently it has been Patricia & Lavender ~ & because they don't get on they have been one @ either end of the 2nd roost.

The newbies are all quite small birds that can squeeze into no space @ all till the big girls can't even turn round on the roost & there's certainly no space for someone as clumsy as Lavender to jump up if she's dithered too long!! They are very good @ sheltering under bigger bodies until the pecking dies down too but I can't say either Lavender or Patricia was happy about it last night. All day their weight works to their advantage & they can hustle the little ones but it is their downfall night time. With our temperatures dipping into single figures I have been doling out a little cracked corn before bed to tide every one through the cold dark. So far everyone seems to be doing ok.
