Ribh's D'Coopage

When the tyre hits the Gravel & Everything flies Apart.

I took Medh to the vet.
The vet gave us medications: a liquid to be syringed & a packet of horse tablets.

Easier than medicating a cat, she assured me demonstrating tossing a horse tablet down a chicken throat was easy~peasy. Hmmmm... I have cats...

So home we came with some trepidation because the truth is I have never medicated a chicken before. Very, very rarely have I ever had to do a cat. Their chicken wormer goes in their water. I am strictly hands off when it comes to medications ~ but, hey, it looked doable.

Do you have any idea how far a chicken can spit a horse tablet?

I looked for it for a good 5 minutes!
The 1st time it took me 1/2 an hour to get that tablet down a chicken throat. This afternoon we managed to get it all swallowed in 2!

Oh, & then we had to do the liquid stuff.

Apart from being terrified of aspirating the poor bird, she was completely terrified & I was in mortal terror of breaking her neck trying to get her to hold still. Yes, I had her wrapped in a towel. Yep, well tucked under my arm. No Idea how she could still turn into a squirming snake & do double somersaults in my arms. 🙄

She's obviously feeling a bit better. She is harder to catch & making her displeasure more known. I'm a nervous wreck but it has higlighted one thing: I need to get my glasses prescription changed. :lau

Well, that sounded like...an adventure. Well done Ribh! :clap

Did you have assistance? I find it helps to have someone there to hand me things or just give moral support.:hugs

If you count 2 small children offering advice to chook & adult alike! :lau They mostly wanted to pet her & she was rolling her eyes trying to avoid contact. At least their dad was clued in enough to remove them from the fray.

Not sure yet, Shad...:idunno I have Mhari in broody jail to top everything off. That girl sure does choose her times! 🙄 Medh seems a bit brighter but whether it's meds masking symptoms or she is genuinely feeling better I'm not sure. The man is still crook & I've picked up something as well. It never rains but it pours! 😕 At some point my house guests are departing so more temporary chaos. I'll have a better idea in a day or so. :hugsHope all is well with your flock.
Sick men are worse than sick chickens.:D
Being anti social I'm usually pleased to see 'guests' leaving. My eldest daughter would probably be an exception. She's very good at doing things in the right place at the right time with no supervision.
I hope your health picks up quickly.:hugs

These are lovely photos, Shad. I so enjoy seeing how everything calms & settles when they go to roost. All the days troubles & upsets get forgotten & peace reigns.
I must admit, I give a sigh of relief when everyone is accounted for and shut in for the night. Very rarely have any in coop dramas.

I have not tried giving a chicken a pill. Unfortunately last year between the worming and Patsy's slow decline, I did a lot of medicating. I got very good at holding the hen in the crook of my right arm, using my right hand to open the beak and my left hand to inject the medicine. Here I am with Hattie.

For Patsy's pills, I crushed them and dissolved them in water. I then gave the suspension to her with a syringe. It was way easier than a pill. You may want to try that.
