A large portion is knowing what is normal for them and then what looks off. Yes, they hide things well but if you really know them and how they behave, you can spot things early.

@micstrachan is someone who strikes me as excellent at this even though her time with her flock tribe can be very limited.

Thanks, Bob. I do watch them as closely as I can. Dorothy laid a soft lie from the roost last night. Daylight savings is helping with more observation time, though today it was raining and my daughter needed help with something, so they got zero free range time and my time with them was minuscule. I’m sorry I have been unable to keep up on this thread, @Ribh.

Honestly, I'm not. I've just spent so much of my life here with them that I know them well and I've been in a position to see problems early.
Many people might get half an hour a day with their chickens. I'm lucky if I get half an hour a day withouut them.

Exactly! With the wet weather my chicken time has been cut drastically short. Any dry spell I get I'm out checking everyone over. Most people don't seem to bother. I learnt from you to use my time with them constructively.

But don't sell yourself short Ribh. I have learned a lot from you and your chicken observations too.

Confidence is so key. My abysmal ignorance has had me dithering instead of acting on occasion because I didn't trust myself enough. I have absorbed the dictum: first do no harm...which by the way I've just discovered isn't actually in the Hippocratic Oath. Who knew...
