Ribh's D'Coopage

Despite have 1/2 an acre in the middle of suburbia I have seen very few wild birds in the garden. There are the usual suspects: rosellas, kookaburras, magpies, blue faced honey eaters & pigeons. I was super thrilled to find wood ducks this morning. They do an even better job than the chooks @ cleaning up the bugs ~ & bugs there were in plenty . There are three big raised vegetable beds, a double row of fruit trees & a low bed of tomatoes & basil. The basil was rife with katydids ~ who have suddenly found their food haven a very dangerous arena indeed. My chooks have been waxing fat on them.

Most of the hard work has already been done & there are already plenty of vine vegetables running rampant up the wire: cucumber, cherry tomatoes , & sweet potato. The only one of those I actually eat is sweet potato. I have been adding the things I like: strawberries with their companion herbs of dill & coriander...I made sure to choose plants with plenty of runners so I get a better bang for my buck! 😅

Butter beans, french green beans, zucchini, silverbeet, Rosemary & lots & lots of parsley!

I walk the dogs through the local wildlife strip most days. The signs say to watch for koalas. All I've seen have been the wallabies!:lau This is a whip tail but I've also seen one of the orange macropods. I didn't get a good look as the grandies were arguing about non~existant snakes.🙄 There is abundant bird life but my eyes are no longer sharp enough to identify most of it ~ only birds I'm already really familiar with like drongos, rufus fantails, mistletoes, noisy friar birds & down by the creek amongst the lantana I'm pretty sure there are wrens.

The cats have mostly adjusted. The dogs have settled & the chooks have been busily hiding eggs ~ but more of that later....:th

It looks like a wonderful place to live.

@BY Bob laugh all you want. 🙄 Half my flock is broody & yes, there is usually someone in that empty box.

Plus, judging by all the feathers I have plenty of moulters. And we are in autumn...
so when egg production plummeted to pretty much zilch I thought, oh well, to be expected...

Then last night I lost Chavi. Everyone else came running when I rattled the food bin but no Chavi. Round & round the yard I went checking up, checking low down, on tree branches & every hidden pocket. She'd completely disappeared. No forlorn pile of feathers to indicate a predator had taken her. No giveaway chirp. Nothing. Given she's dark & a great little hider I was furious with her! 😅 Back to the coop & there she was busily stuffing her face. I rolled my eyes but accepted that somehow I'd missed her when I did my count. Um, no...
This morning I found all my missing eggs. With so many bantams they are squeezing into really small spaces & have been stockpiling...🙄 in the coop @ least but really well hidden. Ha'penny seems to have opted to join them even though I did find 2 of her eggs in a vegetable bed! Honestly, my birds are complete & utter nutters!

Your place looks really nice 😍

It's amazing. Like a mini farm but less than a 5 minute walk to the shops, Lincraft, & the library. Everyone seems to have lovely, well established gardens. My 2 rooms are spacious but small enough not to generate a lot of housework. The kitchen area would be my only beef as there's no proper kitchen & all cooking is done with appliances. I like being a one pot cook so It's not a huge issue.
