I too am an early riser. Just cause I'm oldI'm often up by 4am ~ especially in summer. It's light then & the coolest part of the day. Not so keen on early rising when it's wet & cold.

This morning I was woken by a rooster crowing ~ or @ least I hope it was a rooster 'cause then it means it's not one of mine!
One of my BAs was doing a little *young cockerel* sort of crow for a bit, but nothing full bodied like this boy was doing. It sounded close & I don't know anyone else round here who has chickens.
I'm conscious of noise, just because I find my neighbour's yappers infuriating & even the bark of the cattle dog on the other side annoying, though he's not very noisy. So I was less than charmed to realise how much noise was emanating from my pen this morning. The big girls were out because I am supplementing their feed @ the moment; they're all in various stages of molt though the BRs are still laying so need all the help they can get. Everything should have been quiet & peaceful. *sigh* Luna, the nut job, was running round the pen issuing this loud trill & having @ Patricia/Penny [I do not know what to call this girl!]. It is a most unchook like sound. I don't know what her issue was but she was having her say about it loud & clear. It is probably a pecking order issue. Luna seems to have aspirations ~ so surprising as Favorelles [even Xs] aren't generally the most assertive sorts & Penny wasn't backing down any. Luna was so incredibly timid @ first it is rather Jekyll & Hydish of her to suddenly transform into this shrewish harridan scolding the whole pen @ the top of her lungs. Hope she changes back soon.
Right now all of my birds are in lock down. I've had a red fox working on the flock while they free range. Fox is smart figures out when the LGD (you'd hate him as he barks a lot) is in the house. Anything smaller than a fox, he'll kill. Well, he's finally gotten smart enough to run skunks off from a distance. Fox and Coyote as well as other dogs, he runs them off from a distance. "Listen to my big 40kg body bark" What's really funny is the Neighbor's dog will tell him when it's just run something off in our direction and he'll go looking for it. Meanwhile my hens start their daily discussion from house to house. The Holland house almost always starts it, then it moved to the Greenhouse where the RIWs and Turkey Girls are. Then the ducks chime in and finally the Dels have to get into the act. Thankfully my neighbor loves the raucous as well as the turkey's gobble and the rooster's crowing.
So far she's out smarted me.... but if I can get her in my sights she's done.
I've read LGDs have a high prey drive. I couldn't cope with that. I have the wrong sort of personality to do dogs, especially strong, stubborn dogs. My chickens weren't bothering me but it was very early & they were being very loud.
I like foxes ~ just not round the chickens. They are smart & cruel & very good @ what they do. I don't imagine yours is going to live long.

You know... I never thought of that.Let’s hope not, with the neighbor’s dog in cahoots with his LGD! They will get rid of it eventually!
Maybe hearing the Rooster got them riled? Girls will be girls?Sometimes I swear the girls in Mr Marans Pen are Taunting the cockerels in theirs! I’ve noticed when the boys over there start trying to call them over and showing off... well let’s just say my girls seem quite fickle and not very monogamous
it can set off quite a ruckus sometimes...
She's probably got kits hidden away somewhere. It really drives them to hunt.So far she's out smarted me.... but if I can get her in my sights she's done.
