Ribh's D'Coopage

Hello everyone! I haven't been piping up much lately because life has been too hectic for BYC, but I've got something special to show you.

Remember I lost my old cat Charlie to lymphoma recently? Well, I decided to honour her memory by adopting another senior feline and providing a stable home for an unwanted cat. Kittens are generally snapped up, so I always take seniors.

She's called Blossom. She's 10. She spent most of her life on the streets, graduated to a shed two years ago, and a foster home one year ago. Now she's in her forever home. I'm hoping her street smarts will keep mice at bay.

So the menagerie is at 3 chooks and one cat.

@Kris5902 My barnevelder (Janet - named adter mum who didn't like animals at all except where they granted her social status eg horse riding in hyde park when she was 15) is the exact opposite, nest, egg, decamp within 15 minutes. Very businesslike. Mary the Australorp is the lingerer. Sandy is also fast. By the way, she's almost fully integrated. Janet picks on her a little too much for them to spend the day enclosed in the coop, but they can share the whole chook yard with coops. They sleep in the big coop every night.

Oh, I'm so glad you adopted a senior! They get overlooked & they make wonderful pets. She is lovely. Our present boys were older kittens, verging on being unadoptable. So sad because they are truly wonderful cats!

Congratulations on a successful integration! I knew you would do it! :)

If you're up for a funny story, here's one... When I was very young, I spent every other weekend at my maternal grandmother's house. She had chickens, and I loved fried bacon and eggs at her house. Grandpa cooked the eggs, they were nearly burnt on the bottom (crunchy) and the yolks were bright orange and full on liquid. So a couple of pieces of toast three or four strips of bacon and two eggs... I was in heaven. Mom and Dad would cook me store bought eggs at home and I'd yak. It made them so mad. And it was something I didn't understand until growing my own eggs. The texture and flavor of the eggs was sooo much different. I couldn't stomach the store bought eggs. But fresh eggs well that was a different story.
Yep. Our RH neighbours will take all the eggs I can spare. They'd much rather have ours than shop bought ones & rave about their flavour & colour.

@Ribh how's the molt coming on? Are her feathers still dropping? I've got more black feather litter everyday. And it's been quite cold at night. I'm a bit worried about her bald patches. She's not eating well either. I'm going to get her some special protein treats this weekend, maybe ham slices.
All Namaste's pin feathers are coming through but the girl is seriously in tatters, underweight, prone to going off on her own & sun bathing ~ which is understandable. And she isn't roosting ~ which is new, just sleeping in the favourite nesting box. I figure it's probably a bit warmer than the roost so have let her be. I'm adding mealworm treats & this to her food ~ not the wormer, the other. Talk to your produce guy. I'm sure he'll have a helpful suggestion or two because you'll be a lot colder already than we ever get & you've got an arctic front coming through.
