Ribh's D'Coopage

I would be the same. They should settle down soon, surely. Poor Lottie.
I'm taking the cuddling together as a good sign & this morning we had to be on the mainland but we came home to 1 egg in the new nesting boxes & some of the newbies downstairs so it is sorting itself out. :)

After reading all your messages, I'm counting my suburban blessings.
lol Swings & round~a~bouts. What we give up in amenities we gain in peace & beauty. It's just frustrating when the powers that be want to take with nothing in return.

Yep. People here lug jerry cans to & from the mainland just so they don't have to buy island fuel but honestly, what you expend in time & hassel, it isn't worth it. Ditto cartons of beer but I had to do it when we still used the little boats & for me, a few extra dollars to not have to cart stuff is worth it. The number of yoghurt cartons I had to ditch because they came undone on the boats!

Yes, we try to line our vehicle fills up as efficiently as possible, but when you look at the cost of the ferry you need to buy 100L to make the savings worthwhile. Liquor and beer is highly regulated, so it’s the same price on island, except in the pub...

It is more economically viable for us to have an island car & a mainland car, barge costs being what they are. Timewise the barge takes over an hour, the ferry less than 20 minutes, less if you run your own boat but then you have to calculate rego & fuel ~ & panic stations. Nothing quite like having the engine cut out @ midnight when someone forgot the torch! Especially in weather. 25knots in winter rain is no fun @ all!

Is it fall in Australia? We are supposed to be spring in USA - some warm days, but, then back to cold and threats of snow. Very crazy this year.:idunno
Yes 1st month of fall nearly done but still very warm where we are. Coolish 1st thing in the morning but our days are lovely. :)

Yep, I’m thinking we should start a comedy routine... “you know you’re an islander if...” we could go mainstream like Jeff Foxworthy? We are about an hour and a half out by ferry. As the bird flies about 1/2 hour to the big island on a chartered water taxi. Used to be the only route to the south side of our island was by boat... until husband’s grandmothers brother sold half the land, and the buyers put in an illegal road back in the late 90’s. Said illegally obtained private road is, of course, in better shape than the public ones too!

lol There are some great island stories about. My friend used to travel to school on the tractor tray ~ when she got big enough she drove the tractor & her siblings rode the tray but she tells the story of the tractor chasing her dad down the hill one day... *sigh*

We got a call one morning to help out a mate. He'd driven his car of the barge ramp & it was stuck in the mud. Big night out. :D

Or my favourite: the day the cement truck lost its brakes coming down the hill to board the barge...& kept coming...
:lau:gig:lol:

Our land used to be part of a farm & the farmer put in an illegal ramp on our point ~ with road. It used to be a great fishing spot. He dredged a channel & there was a hole just of the point that had really big fish...but that's the thing, isn't it because it's either figure out how to do it yourself or do without. Our roads were all originally put in by farmers. Our go to First Aid kit used to be Betadine & Elastoplast. It dealt with pretty much everything except snake bite.

Our first year I got a tropical ulcer that wouldn't clear up so I broke open a penicillin tablet & poured it straight on the wound. I wouldn't recommend it but it did the trick. My kids will tell you stories of me handing them a wad of tissues & saying:If there's no bone showing you'll probably live but if it's still bleeding in 5 minutes tell me. lol It sounds so medieval but when you don't have a dr... These days a helicopter will air lift an emergency out using the cricket ground as a helipad.

Here are the goofy gals trying to figure out the new sleeping arrangements... I had to move them around.. some were roosting on the ledge where the ladder hooks.. which is prolly fine but.. and one was sleeping in the sand in between the roosts :he
